Description
Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, after an outrageous New Years Eve party, on January 1st 1942,at Martin Aircraft' main office, convinced the company president to sell him two of the brand
new B-26 Marauder bombers, to play with.
PAV, and his merry team of reprobate student designers, sliced, diced, glued, and screwed (!),
and cobbled, and stapled, bolted, redesigned, etc., the two Marauders into an improved version
of the original (see Wikipedia B-26 history, quite fascinating).
PAV first rebuilt the PW-R2800, rated at 2000hp, by adding an extra row of cylinders, which
boosted the power to 3,000hp(!). The propeller blades were increased in size which generated a
greater thrust potential.
The fuselage was lengthened, and the span of the narrow wings was widened. PAV made the tail
planes smaller, which helped to reduce drag.
Armament was improved, as well. The two top turrets carried four .50cal machine guns, while the
tail was defended with two .50cal weapons. The bombardier commanded a single nose-mounted .50cal,
and the plane's belly had a single .50cal mg. . The bomb-load was increased from the original B-26 4,000lbs
to 6,000lbs.
Unloaded, the Veeblefitzer-Martin B-226 "Super Marauder" could outclass the B-26 speed, 287mph, achieving
305mph at 10,000ft. Fully loaded, it flew at 290mph.
Pictured is the Veeblefitzer prototype, which actually flew a number of combat missions in the European Theater
of Operations, based in England.
It was nick-named "Yellow Rose of Texas" because the whole crew-members where from Texas(!).
The craft flew missions with the regular B-26's of the 332nd Bomb Group in mid 1943, and its superior
firepower was appreciated, as it acted as a gun-ship after releasing its bomb-load, by the crews of the
other B-26 bombers. The pilot, Capt. Brent O'Gara, would weave his unloaded plane over the formation
of Marauders after the bomb-run, providing cover-fire against attacking Luftwaffe fighters.
The U.S. War Dept., considered ordering mass production of this machine, in this wild alt' universe
of Professor Anton Veeblefitzer.
