Influenced ever so slightly by the track 'Colony of Birchmen' by Mastodon. Thought I'd provide my own take on the subjects of this totally awesome song.There's a few bits I'm still not pleased with, such as the 'roots' at the base of the tree, and the shading of the lesser branches, but generally I'm pretty chuffed that I can still draw after a 4 month dry patch.
Much love goes out to the 4H and B pencils that I found at the back of my sofa for letting this one happen.

Your own take. I see...
When I listened through this album, I interpreted the Birchmen as a metaphor for the wolf-man's paranoia/fear of the wilderness and that they were all in his head, which is why he couldn't escape them.
Nice to see a more humanoid take on treefolk, though. That archetype doesn't get enough love.

Cooool. I love the pose in particular. The shading is very strong and gives it a nice, almost embossed look, if not totally 3D.

I was going to add a background, but I gave myself a deadline for the picture (as it's been made for someone's birthday) and couldn't rack my brains quickly enough to figure out how to do a convincing background. Next time round I'll definitely give it a go, as backgrounds are something I really need to get nailed.
