Strange pretty spider... though it's fascinating, I wouldn't touch it.

It seems to be somewhat related to the Araneidae Micrathena sagittata, but I never seen this one.
Maybe the Araneidae Micrathena sagittata could set you on it's trail?
Sadly, being Belgian (Europe) I cannot go look for it myself...
BLOODY nice spider though, and nice picture.

Hmmmm....I can't tell ya what kinda spider it is; but I can tell you it's most likely the female of the species. It matches a description of a spider I once read about in the Encyclopedia Britainnia, but I can't remember the name of the spider anymore unfortunately. If it's the spider I read about; it tends to nest around rivers and is native to America.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I've been wanting to see one of these spiders in person, but I haven't been able to. It's called a spiny spider. [link]
They live commonly in GA.

It looks like a spider in the genus Micrathena. Hereβs the wikipedia article: [link] According to the article, this genus contains more than 100 species. The following three species can be found in the USA:
Micrathena gracilis
Micrathena mitrata
Micrathena sagittata
Yours looks like a Micrathena sagittata.
