A very crispy looking Hulk!
You started as a brush inker . . . what can you tell me about doing something like that with a real brush? It drives me crazy. I thought you fellows worked with brush because it's fast and don't have to worry about smearing. But, in terms of actual hand speed, it's slower, right? You have to lay in the strokes slowly, or you get dry-brush effects.

Also, you have to know when to wipe down that puppy so it won't make a thick line when you're going for a thin one. So, you're always thinking, planning out what you need to do and preparing for it before you make the stroke. Anything else? Please. It's driving me crazy.

thats why i prefer a pen-it's more spontaneous-however, inkers like the late dick giordano as well as klaus janson became so proficient with a brush that they could ink just as spontaneously as if using a pen---as far as doing all that with a brush that i did with markers-it's possible, just time consuming- as you say, wiping down the brush to make sure you get a needle thin line--but one trick is to hit a black area for your wipe, or, hit the thicker lines till you have lessened your load to get a thin line--hope this helps---

It does. So basically I've got the right ideas, just have to practice more so I do stuff automatically, like wiping the brush before I go for thin. Planning. So, I'm on the right track, just can't believe how difficult it is.

Working dark to light as you describe (slabs, spots, weighted lines - then thin lines) is what Gary Martin does.

I'm okay with brush rendering on pen outlines. It's when I do it all with brush, or especially when I do just line work with brush, that it looks sooo messy.

Okay. Thanks!

BTW- You mentioned Giordano. informed me that there is a new book at Amazon.com by ALTER EGO on Dick Giordano's years at Charlton.
