Storytime with Jira

Last Thursday evening, I went home to stay at my parents' house during Holy Week. As I got out of the car, I heard a cat meowing from under one of my family's cars. I called for the cat and it popped out from under the car and rubbed against my legs. It was getting dark so I couldn't see it very well, but I could see that it was Siamese. I'd never seen a stray breed cat before in our neighborhood, so I was a bit confused.

The next day, my mother called me out, saying the cat appeared to be pregnant. I hadn't been able to see in the dark, but yeah, she was. I talked to my husband, and he called the no-kill shelter by our house to see if they could adopt her and her kittens out. He wouldn't be able to drive down to get me until Monday, so in those few days my mother got attached to the cat. I started calling her "Miss Siamese" 'cause I didn't want to name her if we weren't going to keep her.

I talked with my sister about how my mother seemed to want to keep the cat, and I told her, "you know, if they keep her, one of the other cats will die shortly." (It's an observation I've had over the years. I call it "The curse of the 16" - where my family can't go under or above that number. People in our neighborhood aren't good about spaying/neutering their cats so they wind up at my parents' house. :/) (And no they don't all live in the house with my family - my parents have a small split house in the backyard where most of the cats live, so they have their own cat house. )

On Monday morning, my husband came down and we took Miss Siamese to the vet so they could get her ready to be sent to the shelter. I got a call that my parents had decided they would probably foot the bill to adopt her out, so I figured all was good. The vet called to let us know that she was going to have 6 kittens - probably in the next week or so.

Flash forward to yesterday. I got a call from my father, saying he had bad news. We have 4 15-year-old cats, and one isn't in good shape, so I thought he was calling me about her. Nope. One of the other cats, our 10-year-old white cat named Cotton (who has heterochromia - one blue eye and one brown eye and is deaf), had unexpectedly had a seizure and they had found him unresponsive. They took him to the vet, and the vet told them he probably wouldn't live much longer. I haven't heard any updates, but am waiting to hear more bad news of his passing.

After spending $300 on vet bills from Cotton, I doubt my parents will go through with adopting Miss Siamese, so I drew this for my mother. She always loves how I turn the cats into Sonic characters.
