Description I think this is a very important lesson.

At the moment, the episode has not come out yet. Though, alicorn Twilight has been something hinted at since season one, and as a writer I am excited to see change and appreciate the possibility of having some clarity on the mythology of Equestria. I highly doubt the show creators would break the friendship of the characters, nor would they make Twilight “Outlive” her friends. Remember who the target audience is: Young, impressionable little girls with dreams of being their own princess in some way. To see a character they are familiar with becoming a princess, not from being related to royalty but instead from her own hard work and diligence is inspiring for a young child.

We’ve seen many princesses who are given this role from the start. Our poor, Disney girls always pining for something more, sitting in their sheltered life longing for a prince or an adventure. Instead, we are seeing a young woman who has EARNED her place as a princess from her kindness, knowledge, and her experience with her friends.

This is a very healthy thing for young girls to see, and it’s a rare sight, so I am very excited to see what this could do for those children.

People are panicking over something that has nothing to back up the panic.

I’ll take these points people make against alicorn Twilight and rebuttal them here:

Twilight is becoming a god and will outlive her friends

Nowhere in the show has it been stated that Alicorns are gods. We also do not know a pony lifespan, or Cadence’s lifespan. All we know is the 2 Princesses lived over 1,000 years, but Cadence we have witnessed growing up with Twilight, and she’s also an Alicorn Princess. Plus, she married a unicorn. Why would she do that if she was going to outlive him?

Twilight’s friendship will be over because of this!

Why? Why would her friends leave her over something like this? Why would she NOT be allowed to see them? What’s stopping her friends from coming with her, or her deciding she wants to rule in Ponyville? We don’t even know what she will be a princess of yet, or if she’s replacing anyone or just being given a new role. Also, no one ever said you have to lose your friends just because you moved away or got a better job. True friends find a way to stick together no matter what, even if their thousands of miles or even oceans apart.

Also, surely she can’t take this new role by herself. Her friends can be there to support her, and pursue their own destinies and dreams as well.

Hasbro is making her a princess just to make more toys!

Well, why is this a bad thing? Don’t Bronies like to collect the toys? Havn’t the toys been getting a bit stale and repetitive lately? So, we have a new princess toy. Hasbro is a toy company, My Little Pony has always been a toy franchise. The whole point of the show has ALWAYS been to market toys, but they are taking a new approach to it by actually giving the show life and thought and some darned good quality! When Rarity was given butterfly wings, it was there so they could release Butterfly Wing ponies. No one complained about this. Crystal Empire released a new set of sparkly toys. No one complained about this. Everything in the show has been to promote the toys, nothing has changed. They even made a White Celestia for us because people wanted her accurate, and they did so.

I have faith that the writers will put some logic and good lore behind this whole thing, and will take care of it, just as they took care of ‘Butterfly’ ponies and ‘Crystal’ ponies, and even the Wedding sets.

For collectors, Alicorn Twilight is a fresh new toy to have on the shelf, and she’s honestly not a bad design. (Well, her dress is a bit silly…)

Twilight Alicorn will ruin the show!

It’s not the end. As a princess, it opens a whole new WORLD of possibilities we never had before! We’ve been in Ponyville for 3 seasons, shouldn’t it be fair to give the show a chance to take a new direction? Rather than lessons of friendship, we can learn lessons of responsibility, and explore the greater world of Equestria. Think about it, if she becomes a Princess, she would need to become familiar with the world around her, and her friends can still come with her and help her.
Being a princess does NOT end a story, in opens a new page. They already said there will be a season 4, and I want to see more based on the mythology and society of Equestria. And Twilight being a princess is a potential gateway to that whole world!

Well, if she becomes an Alicorn it’s not fair that her friends don’t!

Not everyone in a circle of friends is going to become famous or achieve greatness at the same time. It’s illogical and highly unlikely. Another thing, what would her friends really have to gain from being alicorns? Twilight is training her magic, this has been her destiny as the Princess’s protege from the start of her lessons. Her friends do not have these same goals.

In fact, Twilight becoming an Alicorn can even aid her friends in reaching their own dreams. Rainbow Dash is already on her way to being a Wonderbolt, and they seem to reside in Canterlot.

Rarity’s dresses became noticed in Canterlot, and she’s always wanted to live there with the culture and fashion. Her friend being a princess opens a whole new world of fashion possibilities for her.

Applejack was given a high responsibility as head of the family when she was given the task of putting together the family reunion. She’s content with her life on the farm, and has no reason to need to be an alicorn. But her friend being a princess could help provide more funding for her farm, and might bring ponies in from other towns wanting to try their food.

Fluttershy is content with her animals, and Pinkie is just… Pinkie. They are fine with who they are, they wont have anything to gain from being Alicorn Princesses.

So, really, the only one that seems to fit that role is Twilight Sparkle, and she’s honestly earned it after all her hard work.

In Closing, I just want to say that everyone should calm down, think of the good possibilities this could open, and put a little more trust in the writers. We don’t know where this could go. We don’t know if it will be a permanent change, or a short gag. We don’t know how the episode will end or what Twilight chooses. We don’t know what could be in store for season 4.

The unknown is scary, yes. It’s the most common thing we fear. But the community is what truly makes Bronies, NOT the show, and as a community we should be ready to embrace change and continue the way we always have.

With love and toleration.

Nice work making all the other mane six the bad guys in this that they need to act like this.

I think that's more what people hate about it, that the other mane six will just be pointless after she turns into even more of a god-mode sue... and then your comic pretty much has the mane six have to apologise to her for not accepting her awesomeness.

I don't know, I still think Twilight becoming an alicorn would be a fitting ending to Friendship is Magic. However, something I'd like to see is all of her friends becoming alicorns temporally as an eleventh hour superpower. Perhaps the love between King Sombra and Queen Chrysalis could be too strong for the Elements of Harmony with their regular bearers, so the Mane six find some magical items that get them turned into alicorns, fight through the changelings, get to Sombra and Chrysalis, explain the other types of love there are, and overpower Sombra and Chrysalis that way.

Regardless, I hope this show doesn't succumb to seasonal rot.

As far as I can tell, its a case of how every Mary Sue author-insert OP was generally an alicorn. And Twilight becoming one is sort of conflated with worries that not everything every writer does is necessarily for the good of the show, and we've had a series of alicorn-related curved balls to make us worry that Hasbro's urge to push more toys might damage the setting's verisimilitude.

Such curveballs include:

Luna Eclipsed (Not much setting-related to complain about here, actually. Its just counts as a curveball.)
Hearth's Warming Eve (Celestia didn't always rule? Wait, why are Celestia and Luna on their flag? DID InsertAuthorHere's "My little Alicorn" get it right and the sisters where goddesses that created the Sun and Moon, but left the ponies to rule themselves for a time?)
Mysterious Mare Do Well. (Still counts as Rainbow's inability to figure out that the flying, magical superhero was in fact multiple ponies can only be explained by the non-rarity of Alicorns. Or, you could just say that Merriweather Williams sucks at her job.)
Canterlot Wedding (Cadence! But also, Celestia gets defeated...and kind of by Twilight's Brother...if only via parasitic proxy. That's...ominous.)
Corination (Do I even need to say anything?)

Alicorns and how rare/special they are has been up in the air since Cadence came up. (Although Hearth's Warming Eve's statement that Celestia and Luna did not always rule was problematic.)

Honestly, I think I wanted to call foul on the previews for the Canterlot Wedding episode last season. "Whaat? Another Alicorn? And she's marrying Twilight's Brother? Oh my fucking god, this is some powerful Mary Sue shit brewing up, the writer's have officially jumped the shark!"

...And then I turned out to like Cadence. They had all of five minutes to establish both Shining Armor and Cadence as people important to Twilight, and generally succeeded. And then, in what I swear to this day is an interception of all the possible hatred directed towards Cadence before she even got a second of screentime, presented her as kind of a bitch. ...and then it turns out that she is actually a fake and we finally meet the real Cadence.

What's that? She dances with Pinkie Pie!? I'm sold! There are no glorified power fantasies in the hollowed-out shell of a character amongst those who do that!

...But the show never quite clarified what the whole "Alicorn" situation was.

Still, it seems that Celestia and Luna were still unique. Since Cadence was a teenager when Twilight was a filly (and not ageless like Celestia and Luna), and since we've seen a grand total of ZERO Alicorn background ponies, odds are Alicorns are still pretty special.

Those Sun and Moon cutie marks have to account for something. Also, they ARE in fact longer lived than other ponies. Celestia has not aged a day since Granny Smith's parents met her. If nothing else, its likely that they ascended to a type of godhood (and alicornhood?). Like the fanfiction "Paradise" by SlyWit predicts.

But yes. I'd say if anypony was going Alicorn-ify, it'd be Twilight.

Or Pinkie. with literally no explanation.

Rainbow Dash: EXPLAIN THIS BULLSHIT! *thunderclap*

Pinkie Pie: Oh, I eated a cupcake.

Rainbow Dash: .....THAT IS NOT EXAPLAINING! *thunderclap again*

I think the reason that people didn't complain about Rarity being given butterfly wings, or the crystal ponies is because they were one-time things that had no lasting impact on the main characters or the status quo of the show. This on the other hand is looking to be a permanent change to the show and many people are worried because it does have the potential of going horribly wrong. I also think that many bring up the whole "hasbro is just doing it to sell more toys" argument because it feels like hasbro cares more about marketing toys with the show instead of producing quality a quality series. Anyway my thoughts about it is that it feels to early to be doing this. I know Twilight has been hinted to be destined for greater things but I would want something like this to be saved for the finale of the series as a whole or at least be implimented much later that it is now. Since it seems that a fourth season is in the works it kinda makes you wonder "where can it go at this point?" I mean it can allow them to do new things with the show, but at the same time it takes away things that they could have done. Anyway I'm still feeling a little uneasy with this but I'll at least wait until the finale comes before I'm certain.

The reason why didn't hate the butterfly wings was because rarity didn't become an alicorn. But twilight did, and look on the result. So many images of twilight crying over her friends graves since she will outlive them. That is not what I want to think about when I see twilight. I can rant more about this. But instead I'm going to say that the episode sounded as a horrible written fanfic.

I've heard one of the writers stated that Twilight won't outlive her friends. But I do understand your point, we have been given no solid information about alicorns in the show leaving us with nothing but fan theories to go on. I've seen people speculate that they're going to turn the rest of the mane 6 into alicorns as well which I really don't think fits with the rest of the characters, I mean I can believe Twilight being destined for it but the other characters have their own dreams and goals that I don't think would mesh well with being turned into an alicorn princess.

True, I can't see AJ of Fluttershy as an alicorn. But even if Twilight was destined to become an alicorn I think it's really bad. Did she have any say in the matter? and I find it a bit offensive that they needed to change her breed, for her to become a princess. I would love to have seen her becoming a unicorn princess, and trying to adjust to her new life style, instead of her wings.

After reading Meghan McCarthy's article on the Princess Coronation, I can say I'm warming up to the idea much more than I used to. I like that becoming a princess is something that is earned, and for the longest time I've been wanting to know more about the origins of princesses and alicorns.

Truth be told, the only thing that rubs me in the wrong way is that Twilight herself seemed to have come from a wealthy family (although I know this isn't claimed to be a fact). Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns I'd expect to cost quite some money and Twilight herself is pretty privileged to be able to attend. I'd honestly prefer if she started out with a bit more of the humble life instead of having a princess that was a foal-sitter and making it into such an exclusive school, which again was probably very expensive. This only peeves me because I've never came from a financially affluent family, and I think it's a better lesson for a little girl to know that gaining knowledge and earning a successful future doesn't require needing to come from a great childhood.

I'm very excited about the Princess Coronation, though! I'm just hoping the requirements for becoming a princess doesn't include something only possible for unicorns and/or pegasi, but instead something all pony races are capable of. It would again prove that a child's background shouldn't stop them from accomplishing a dream. (I kind of like to think Cadence was originally an earth pony)

Overall, if Princess Celestia's school was free and only exclusive, Twilight starts off as an awkward princess who still has a lot to earn in the sense this is like a new "grade" to her, Alicorn/Princess status can be obtained by all pony races, and the rest of the mane six still get an equal amount of screentime along with helping Twilight adapt to this status for the most part, then I am 100% satisfied with Alicorn Twilight.

(Sorry this was such a long post).

First of all, that "all three races" stuff only made sense for Celestia and Luna, and only if they were unique. With alicorns being their own thing these days, they've been losing their representative quality.

And as for my statement that unicorns are more than likely the only ones who can "ascend", just look at the full synopsis of the episode. It says that "writing her own magic" or some such is what does it somehow. How's an earth pony going to do that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fellmoon In reply to MillennialDan [2013-02-03 00:24:39 +0000 UTC]

Personally the way i look at it Cadance is a lesser alicorn, for a number of reasons. There is the fact of how she has been aging, based on Canterlot Wedding, showing she doesn't likely have the extended lifespan of Celestia and Luna. What I am speaking on is the fact she looked like a teenager in Twilight flashback and how she is now an adult. It would also seem she isn't as powerful, as while Cadance did create a shield so did Shining Armour... though it is a different sort of shield that required constant attention.

Yet there is nothing in canon that, as of yet, counters the intended purpose of Celestia and Luna represent all three races.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MillennialDan In reply to Fellmoon [2013-02-03 00:42:05 +0000 UTC]

As far as aging is concerned, there's nothing in the show that conclusively proves that Cadance is any different from the other two, since we have yet to see her actually get old. Luna and Celestia, though ancient, can reasonably be assumed to have reached maturity at the same pace as anyone else, and just stayed there like a time lord or an elf or some other "immortal".

As for the issue of power, Cadance does seem somewhat less magical than the sisters, but she's also much younger, and age often correlates with ability in this kind of fantasy world (the real world too, come to think of it). And she's already more powerful than typical unicorns anyway.

So no, I don't think there's a difference in "type", they're all the same. Assumptions to the contrary are mostly based on headcanon and emotional resistance to the idea that Cadance will outlive Shining Armor by a large span.

As for representing all three races, there's just no getting around the fact that every single aicorn is a princess, which combined with their magical abilities, puts them more in common with the monarchistic unicorns than the other two, especially earth ponies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fellmoon In reply to MillennialDan [2013-02-03 19:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess then we have different 'headcanon', though my point wouldn't really matter much anyway since in any fanfiction I would write I will likely have Cadance be a unicorn (sorry), though I will also just as likely have her be a lesser alicorn. I would have Celestia and Luna being all three races and be the only ones to be such.

As of the show right now the idea of full and lesser unicorn does not truly go against canon... though you could always argue such.
