Description I think this is a very important lesson.

At the moment, the episode has not come out yet. Though, alicorn Twilight has been something hinted at since season one, and as a writer I am excited to see change and appreciate the possibility of having some clarity on the mythology of Equestria. I highly doubt the show creators would break the friendship of the characters, nor would they make Twilight “Outlive” her friends. Remember who the target audience is: Young, impressionable little girls with dreams of being their own princess in some way. To see a character they are familiar with becoming a princess, not from being related to royalty but instead from her own hard work and diligence is inspiring for a young child.

We’ve seen many princesses who are given this role from the start. Our poor, Disney girls always pining for something more, sitting in their sheltered life longing for a prince or an adventure. Instead, we are seeing a young woman who has EARNED her place as a princess from her kindness, knowledge, and her experience with her friends.

This is a very healthy thing for young girls to see, and it’s a rare sight, so I am very excited to see what this could do for those children.

People are panicking over something that has nothing to back up the panic.

I’ll take these points people make against alicorn Twilight and rebuttal them here:

Twilight is becoming a god and will outlive her friends

Nowhere in the show has it been stated that Alicorns are gods. We also do not know a pony lifespan, or Cadence’s lifespan. All we know is the 2 Princesses lived over 1,000 years, but Cadence we have witnessed growing up with Twilight, and she’s also an Alicorn Princess. Plus, she married a unicorn. Why would she do that if she was going to outlive him?

Twilight’s friendship will be over because of this!

Why? Why would her friends leave her over something like this? Why would she NOT be allowed to see them? What’s stopping her friends from coming with her, or her deciding she wants to rule in Ponyville? We don’t even know what she will be a princess of yet, or if she’s replacing anyone or just being given a new role. Also, no one ever said you have to lose your friends just because you moved away or got a better job. True friends find a way to stick together no matter what, even if their thousands of miles or even oceans apart.

Also, surely she can’t take this new role by herself. Her friends can be there to support her, and pursue their own destinies and dreams as well.

Hasbro is making her a princess just to make more toys!

Well, why is this a bad thing? Don’t Bronies like to collect the toys? Havn’t the toys been getting a bit stale and repetitive lately? So, we have a new princess toy. Hasbro is a toy company, My Little Pony has always been a toy franchise. The whole point of the show has ALWAYS been to market toys, but they are taking a new approach to it by actually giving the show life and thought and some darned good quality! When Rarity was given butterfly wings, it was there so they could release Butterfly Wing ponies. No one complained about this. Crystal Empire released a new set of sparkly toys. No one complained about this. Everything in the show has been to promote the toys, nothing has changed. They even made a White Celestia for us because people wanted her accurate, and they did so.

I have faith that the writers will put some logic and good lore behind this whole thing, and will take care of it, just as they took care of ‘Butterfly’ ponies and ‘Crystal’ ponies, and even the Wedding sets.

For collectors, Alicorn Twilight is a fresh new toy to have on the shelf, and she’s honestly not a bad design. (Well, her dress is a bit silly…)

Twilight Alicorn will ruin the show!

It’s not the end. As a princess, it opens a whole new WORLD of possibilities we never had before! We’ve been in Ponyville for 3 seasons, shouldn’t it be fair to give the show a chance to take a new direction? Rather than lessons of friendship, we can learn lessons of responsibility, and explore the greater world of Equestria. Think about it, if she becomes a Princess, she would need to become familiar with the world around her, and her friends can still come with her and help her.
Being a princess does NOT end a story, in opens a new page. They already said there will be a season 4, and I want to see more based on the mythology and society of Equestria. And Twilight being a princess is a potential gateway to that whole world!

Well, if she becomes an Alicorn it’s not fair that her friends don’t!

Not everyone in a circle of friends is going to become famous or achieve greatness at the same time. It’s illogical and highly unlikely. Another thing, what would her friends really have to gain from being alicorns? Twilight is training her magic, this has been her destiny as the Princess’s protege from the start of her lessons. Her friends do not have these same goals.

In fact, Twilight becoming an Alicorn can even aid her friends in reaching their own dreams. Rainbow Dash is already on her way to being a Wonderbolt, and they seem to reside in Canterlot.

Rarity’s dresses became noticed in Canterlot, and she’s always wanted to live there with the culture and fashion. Her friend being a princess opens a whole new world of fashion possibilities for her.

Applejack was given a high responsibility as head of the family when she was given the task of putting together the family reunion. She’s content with her life on the farm, and has no reason to need to be an alicorn. But her friend being a princess could help provide more funding for her farm, and might bring ponies in from other towns wanting to try their food.

Fluttershy is content with her animals, and Pinkie is just… Pinkie. They are fine with who they are, they wont have anything to gain from being Alicorn Princesses.

So, really, the only one that seems to fit that role is Twilight Sparkle, and she’s honestly earned it after all her hard work.

In Closing, I just want to say that everyone should calm down, think of the good possibilities this could open, and put a little more trust in the writers. We don’t know where this could go. We don’t know if it will be a permanent change, or a short gag. We don’t know how the episode will end or what Twilight chooses. We don’t know what could be in store for season 4.

The unknown is scary, yes. It’s the most common thing we fear. But the community is what truly makes Bronies, NOT the show, and as a community we should be ready to embrace change and continue the way we always have.

With love and toleration.

Twilight being an alicorn would make things unbalanced, as there are 2 unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies. The show is about 6 friends, not 1 Princess and her 5 subjects. It just wouldn't be right or the same to have Twilight above and "superior" to the other 5.

I'm really hoping that Twilight being a princess or alicorn is just for part of one or two episodes, and that the writers will put a twist at the end where everything will return to balance.

Rumors was what drove me to not like the idea of Twilight becoming an Alicorn, but that is just ridiculous. Not every rumor that is out there will be true, and that's all I can hope for. I'll keep an open mind about this, and if she really does stay as an Alicorn at the end of the episode, I'll accept it. She's still Twilight and as you put it, it doesn't change who she is on the inside.

Wow, this is a very sensible approach to what was otherwise known as chaos. You have reassured me that there is hope for the show. Even if we don't hve a Season 4, It is the community of bronies that made me like this, more than any other fandom, Why should I lose sight of that just because of some unexpected turns. If this is the end, We've got each other, and thats a lot for Love and Tolerance. Thank you.

While I might not like the idea of her becoming a princess (At least not now, anyway), I certainly look forward to seeing where this goes. Not like there's really anything I can do to change it, so might as well sit back and watch what happens.

Also, love this comic, sums up how I feel they would react to her transformation and "promotion."

I think the reason why people are so against the Alicorn Twilight is because it seems liek such a bad direction for the show to take, almost liek it was straight from a fanfiction. Twilight was already overpowered in the show, and now she get's to become a more powerful creature? If the writers wanted to move the show in a different direction, they could have done so in a much more elegant fashion. How about instead of becoming an Alicorn, Twilight goes to study to become a Mage, the highest title a Unicorn could receive (a.k.a. Starswirl the Bearded level)?

But who knows? The writers have consistently impressed everyone with how well they handle a situation, hopefully this won't be as awful as it sounds. I'm just scared because Season 3 Premiere happened, so it IS POSSIBLE for them to do wrong. Only time (and the new episode) will tell.

A nice comic to help me cope with whole Twilight becoming an alicorn thing, I still don't like her becoming one. I like her alot better as a unicorn and I never did like any of the art depicting her as a alicorn. I just never cared for the idea and thought she was as cuter without wings.

I don't really know why I feel so strongly about this, I just know that every time I see Twilight now that i get really sad thinking about it and the conflicting feelings i have for my favorite pony are depressing me.

You can't really rebuttal feelings and most of the time you can't even reason with them. I hope to eventually come to except Twilicorn but i will always miss plain old Twilight the unicorn.

But you made some very good points there in your description, especially with the comparison to Disney. Simply HOPING for near-impossible things won't do you any good, and will probably make your life miserable; but sometimes the near-impossible can happen.

well i understand your point, especially with this comic but for 2 reasons (why yes i will list them) it would somewhat screw up the show

1.if you notice the show likes to keep things orderly, they have 2 pegisi 2 unicorns and 2 earth ponies, if twilight becomes an alicorn it screws up

2. people have their fav ponies for a reason, mine is pinkie since she literally destroys the laws of physics making her look "awsome" if twilight becomes an allicorn, she is going to far outweigh the ability of her friends and make all the other fans who like the other mane 5 feel bad

3. most importantly 3, twilight would become a wise almost godlike being, erasing all her flaws and with that ruining her weaknesses and finaly the character.

Overcharge In reply to nuke1007 [2013-02-01 01:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Since when are alicorns automatically "wise, godlike beings" with no flaws?

We saw in EPISODE FREAKING ONE that an alicorn is perfectly capable of imperfection. Nightmare Moon, anyone? Or how about Celestia seemingly being physically unable to defend her realm from threats and needing Twilight and her friends to take care of things? Or how about Cadance not being strong enough to keep Sombra from breaking through her defenses?

Alicorn Twi will still have her flaws. Having wings isn't automatically going to make her some absolutely perfect character.

This comic is the greatest thing ever. And your rant is pretty well done too.

MLP is in good hands, the same hands that managed to make what must now amount to millions adult men and women WORLDWIDE love a show for little girls. Have faith, people. If someone can pull it of, it's them.

Also, if the season finale (or season's 4 opener?) ends with an aesop similar to this one... Then I'll daresay that Alicorn Twilight would be the greatest change brought to the series ever since it began. (Then again, "change" may be limited to that pair of wings on her back and a few bowing ponies in the background every once in a while)

I have full confidence in the writers and everyone involved that the episode will turn out just great. They haven't let me down so far. I'm just hoping the doomsayers who try to kick up a storm about this aren't going to be heard so much that some exec decides they have to placate them. (Still sore about Derpy.)

The sad truth is, there are always going to be people who whine and complain about everything they get just because it's not exactly what they thought they wanted or because it had something they didn't really like. I've heard people insist that a movie was awful just because it wasn't perfect by their standards, and now the franchise is ruined forever and the producer owes them an apology and a remake and they deserve everything because they are true loyal fans unlike anyone else. And every time, I envision them as a little five-year old girl, crying and throwing a tantrum because the dollhouse they got for their birthday is the wrong shade of pink.

So yeah. I think it's gonna be an awesome episode, and it'll all work out fine.

BaldDumboRat, you have articulated, in comic and in prose, what I have been saying from the start of the alicorn Twilight rumor. Trust the writers (Which is why my Twitter pic has the "I believe in M.A. Larson" button that pixelkitties made) and think about the real implications. You have done both beautifully. I truly hope people read this and snap out of this stupid, useless, and unreasonable hysteria and give the episode, and the concept, a chance. And if they don't, even if the episode is good, and "leave the fandom" then they weren't true fans to begin with.

They were fans of their "fanfiction" (In the literal and figurative) and what THEY believed the show was about, not what the actual show was about. We live in I am still a fan on TMNT, even after the god awful crossover movie, I'm still a fan of Doctor Who, even after Love and Monsters. I'm still a fan of Star Wars, even after the prequels. A true fan loves something for what it is and for what the people making it give us.

We live in a selfish age these days where people believe that the product of someone else's hard work somehow belongs to them and that they don't owe the creators anything. I thought a fandom around a show with a major message of Generosity and with the mantra of Love and Tolerate would be a little less reactionary and explosive. Anyway, that's my two cents and thank you for an AMAZING comic. Instant Favorite!

Thanks for taking the time to share good reasons not to make a big deal of this. The direction of the show and the writing has always been out of the fan's control, and though bronies make up the majority of consumers for Hasbro's merchandise, it doesn't mean we're entitled to shaping Equestria's history as it unfolds.

I will say, from a writer's standpoint (and something I would like to hear your opinion on), is that it's surprising they would promote the main character's status this early in the series. This is, assuming, if Twilight Sparkle will remain an alicorn/princess from now on. Such a change is usually reserved for the conclusion of a show, where the consequences of this change satisfy a tension that has existed throughout the story--Princess Celestia's apparent "grooming" of Twilight to become a leader. By making Twilight Sparkle a princess this early, it will alleviate this tension and force the audience to seek other overarching plots.

While I understand that Twilight's ascension MLP:FiM makes sense from a marketing standpoint (it's no secret that its a children's show to market toys), from recognizing the patterns of other series and movies, and general understanding of writing stories, Twilight's promotion seems premature, and in my opinion should be saved for the very end. What do you think?

Ok whether you are for or against Twilicorn it really doesn't matter does it if the show is entertaining what is the problem. If you are worried about writing stories or making comics you don't have to be exactly canon of the show, yeah some people prefer that but really if you are not happy with your creativity then how would anyone else feel about it. AS an artist in a fan fic you can choose to ignore something you don't want to use. If you don't like Twilicorn then don't use it I for one is not changing the way I write. I'm a Fallout Equestria side story writer and I'm not going to change my back story because of it, if I do then it is not the story I wanted to tell. Same with my Cup of Ages fic I'm working with, Twilight plays a key role in it and she isn't becoming an Alicorn in the story, because again it is not the story I want to tell. So just everyone chill we are all bronies no matter what happens in the show we still can make our own stories. That is the beauty of imagination. Other than that you have a very good comic and your description got me to write this hoping people will see it, because of what I am seeing in the community I think this must be said.
