Description I think this is a very important lesson.

At the moment, the episode has not come out yet. Though, alicorn Twilight has been something hinted at since season one, and as a writer I am excited to see change and appreciate the possibility of having some clarity on the mythology of Equestria. I highly doubt the show creators would break the friendship of the characters, nor would they make Twilight “Outlive” her friends. Remember who the target audience is: Young, impressionable little girls with dreams of being their own princess in some way. To see a character they are familiar with becoming a princess, not from being related to royalty but instead from her own hard work and diligence is inspiring for a young child.

We’ve seen many princesses who are given this role from the start. Our poor, Disney girls always pining for something more, sitting in their sheltered life longing for a prince or an adventure. Instead, we are seeing a young woman who has EARNED her place as a princess from her kindness, knowledge, and her experience with her friends.

This is a very healthy thing for young girls to see, and it’s a rare sight, so I am very excited to see what this could do for those children.

People are panicking over something that has nothing to back up the panic.

I’ll take these points people make against alicorn Twilight and rebuttal them here:

Twilight is becoming a god and will outlive her friends

Nowhere in the show has it been stated that Alicorns are gods. We also do not know a pony lifespan, or Cadence’s lifespan. All we know is the 2 Princesses lived over 1,000 years, but Cadence we have witnessed growing up with Twilight, and she’s also an Alicorn Princess. Plus, she married a unicorn. Why would she do that if she was going to outlive him?

Twilight’s friendship will be over because of this!

Why? Why would her friends leave her over something like this? Why would she NOT be allowed to see them? What’s stopping her friends from coming with her, or her deciding she wants to rule in Ponyville? We don’t even know what she will be a princess of yet, or if she’s replacing anyone or just being given a new role. Also, no one ever said you have to lose your friends just because you moved away or got a better job. True friends find a way to stick together no matter what, even if their thousands of miles or even oceans apart.

Also, surely she can’t take this new role by herself. Her friends can be there to support her, and pursue their own destinies and dreams as well.

Hasbro is making her a princess just to make more toys!

Well, why is this a bad thing? Don’t Bronies like to collect the toys? Havn’t the toys been getting a bit stale and repetitive lately? So, we have a new princess toy. Hasbro is a toy company, My Little Pony has always been a toy franchise. The whole point of the show has ALWAYS been to market toys, but they are taking a new approach to it by actually giving the show life and thought and some darned good quality! When Rarity was given butterfly wings, it was there so they could release Butterfly Wing ponies. No one complained about this. Crystal Empire released a new set of sparkly toys. No one complained about this. Everything in the show has been to promote the toys, nothing has changed. They even made a White Celestia for us because people wanted her accurate, and they did so.

I have faith that the writers will put some logic and good lore behind this whole thing, and will take care of it, just as they took care of ‘Butterfly’ ponies and ‘Crystal’ ponies, and even the Wedding sets.

For collectors, Alicorn Twilight is a fresh new toy to have on the shelf, and she’s honestly not a bad design. (Well, her dress is a bit silly…)

Twilight Alicorn will ruin the show!

It’s not the end. As a princess, it opens a whole new WORLD of possibilities we never had before! We’ve been in Ponyville for 3 seasons, shouldn’t it be fair to give the show a chance to take a new direction? Rather than lessons of friendship, we can learn lessons of responsibility, and explore the greater world of Equestria. Think about it, if she becomes a Princess, she would need to become familiar with the world around her, and her friends can still come with her and help her.
Being a princess does NOT end a story, in opens a new page. They already said there will be a season 4, and I want to see more based on the mythology and society of Equestria. And Twilight being a princess is a potential gateway to that whole world!

Well, if she becomes an Alicorn it’s not fair that her friends don’t!

Not everyone in a circle of friends is going to become famous or achieve greatness at the same time. It’s illogical and highly unlikely. Another thing, what would her friends really have to gain from being alicorns? Twilight is training her magic, this has been her destiny as the Princess’s protege from the start of her lessons. Her friends do not have these same goals.

In fact, Twilight becoming an Alicorn can even aid her friends in reaching their own dreams. Rainbow Dash is already on her way to being a Wonderbolt, and they seem to reside in Canterlot.

Rarity’s dresses became noticed in Canterlot, and she’s always wanted to live there with the culture and fashion. Her friend being a princess opens a whole new world of fashion possibilities for her.

Applejack was given a high responsibility as head of the family when she was given the task of putting together the family reunion. She’s content with her life on the farm, and has no reason to need to be an alicorn. But her friend being a princess could help provide more funding for her farm, and might bring ponies in from other towns wanting to try their food.

Fluttershy is content with her animals, and Pinkie is just… Pinkie. They are fine with who they are, they wont have anything to gain from being Alicorn Princesses.

So, really, the only one that seems to fit that role is Twilight Sparkle, and she’s honestly earned it after all her hard work.

In Closing, I just want to say that everyone should calm down, think of the good possibilities this could open, and put a little more trust in the writers. We don’t know where this could go. We don’t know if it will be a permanent change, or a short gag. We don’t know how the episode will end or what Twilight chooses. We don’t know what could be in store for season 4.

The unknown is scary, yes. It’s the most common thing we fear. But the community is what truly makes Bronies, NOT the show, and as a community we should be ready to embrace change and continue the way we always have.

With love and toleration.

Even if it does happen I have the feeling they might cop out on it in some way. They brought Trixie back and made her a tyrant but did a cop out near the end and made not only good but tied it all up by having her be forgiven. I think this Alicorn business will be short lived at best.

This is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I don`t remember when has deviation and it`s description (especially the latter one) last time affected me like this. At first I was oppositing the idea of Twilight becoming an alicorn permanently, not temporarily. After reading this comic of yours, I was little bit angry inside, but also slowly started to accept the idea of Twilight turning into alicorn and staying that way. As I start reading the description, I went from confused "Fine, I don`t care anymore! Just do whatever you want with Twilight"-attitude to actually accepting this possibility. It didn`t really change my opinions of what the show should be like in the future, it just made me realize the show with Alicorn Twilight might not be as bad as I first thought.

I don`t just think this is a good text, I think it represent everything that`s good on our fandom. Well, this has nothing to do with all those fanarts,-musics and -videos, but you know what I mean. I really want to thank you for writing this. It`s truly one of the best things I`ve read on this fandom, along with "My Little Dashie" and "If adult men liking MLP FIM is wrong, I don`t want to be right".

Brohoof /)

P.S. If someone thinks I`m making too big deal out this, you might be right. Lately I`ve felt tired at afternoons and overreacted on a lots of things I see on internet. But I know that even if I wasn`t tired, I would have opposited Alicorn Twilight at first as much as I did while being a tired, only more calmly.

this was an excellent comic. I must admit that I have been nervous about the finale, and about the whole Alicorn Twilight thing.

partly it's because the 30-minute format left several episodes this season feeling a little rushed and/ or incomplete ("Wonderbolt Academy," "Keep Calm," I'm looking at YOU) and this sounds like another potential two-parter. but also partly because becoming an Alicorn is sort of a big deal.

however, this makes me feel better about the whole thing, so congratulations. I do hope that season 4 addresses separation anxiety or something similar; just look at Pinkie Pie's reaction to RD going to the academy. or Lesson Zero. or how about some wing size envy? or...

there absolutely needs to be a "Dear Princess Twilight"

I can admit that this being a single 30 minute episode does leave me a bit on edge in terms of rushed writing, but sadly that's all they can give us since they chose to do a 13 episode season. I'm sure they can find a way to make it work. Maybe not as well as a two parter, but who knows.

GeminiJim In reply to JitterbugJive [2013-01-31 23:06:23 +0000 UTC]

well, the episode sounds pretty interesting even without Twilight Princess entering the arena.

It would be awesome to start in media res, with everybody's fates already mixed up. But that's too trippy for MLP:FIM's core audience, so assume the standard set-up, Cutie Mark Chaos and then TS has to fix it, which means around about the 20th minute Twilight gets her wings. jaws drop and roll the end credits.

but it is doable, and we'll just have to wait and see

(image) This is pretty close to where I view the show going in the future (if not carried on in the spirit of the fans, but nobody thinks the show is going anywhere). (message) This is a point I think many people overlook or ignore about the show. This is a show made for little girls and we are the ones who have latched onto it as fans - this doens't make the show ours to control and I believe, as such, that whining about changes and arguing about character development is countrary to the spirit of both the show and to what the community is all about!

Thank you thank you thank you. Not for the comic itself, but for the description. I have been looking everywhere to try and find somebody that will actually take the arguments against Twilight becoming an Alicorn head on and answer then with their own arguments because I wanted somebody to help me feel ok about this. And congratulations you managed to somewhat do that. Though I still vastly hate that they are doing this for a finale instead of for a season opener so we would actually be able to adjust to the change the next weeks instead of months later, that is a personal pet peeve. Well that and it was spoiled to us three weeks before the episode airs but that's beside the point.

One thing I will have to contradict though is the idea that this was intended since season 1. That cannot be true since Faust was in charge during season 1 and she intended for Celestia and Luna to be the only Alicorns.

JitterbugJive In reply to Soniclink137 [2013-01-31 17:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Even if that was the original intention, stories tend to grow and evolve. As a story writer myself, I am constantly shifting the world I created and adding and removing characters, or coming up with new twists along the way. Any change can be done badly, but it can also be done well, like the season finale of season 2.

rjpugh In reply to ??? [2013-01-31 15:48:48 +0000 UTC]

Nice comic. Two points:

First, Celestia and Luna appear to be special, semi-divine creatures. Cadence may have the same physical structure, but as you say, she doesn't appear to be a demigoddess like the two "high" princesses. Ergo, assuming that Twilight would become the same as Celestia or Luna is a shaky assumption. It's possible, but unlikely. Becoming like Cadence, on the other hand, is viable. The episode should shed light on this issue.

Second, "Princess" is ultimately just a title. The wings, while impressive and potentially useful, may simply be a trapping that goes with the title, like a tiara or a gown. Assuming she doesn't let this title go to her head (and she probably won't), Twilight Sparkle will remain her cute, adorkable self.

JitterbugJive In reply to rjpugh [2013-01-31 17:15:25 +0000 UTC]

If not more adorkable because she'll be trying to figure out how to act as an alicorn and as a princess. She could potentially be the most nerdy adorable awkward princess EVER.

I still can't help but think if this whole alicorn thing is a "what-if" situation. The last episode listed on wikipedia states she switches everyone's cutie marks and changes everyones destiny. Could it be possible that maybe she switched places with Celestia? And she has to change everything back?

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing how this episode is handled.

I even at one time hoped I could try to form a plan to stop it from happening (Hope settings set to high). I have however made a apology for it. One my big reasons was I had yet to see any good reason why she should become one. A princess fine but a Alicorn seemed rather forced. You however have pointed out a lot of good reasons that addresses my concerns. To which I thank you very much. Too often I have seen a show degrade in quality because of such mistakes & I just didn't want that to happen to ponies. Because when it started that what it meant to me a hope that one show wouldn't be beaten by executive meddling. That it was better than "hey look our stuff buy it." I just hope things work out of the best. Thanks for this, I need something put my mind at ease.

I see.
Well, at first, I would like to say that your comic is well placed and thought-of.

Secondly, after witnessing so much complaints about the new change that is supposed to happen, I actually had to disconnect myself from all the reviews I saw so far. I, like you, am expecting some form of explanation of the change, the "lore" of it is also intriguing if indeed Twilight is to be an alicorn (I rather need to congratulate you on your well-chosen words) because such changes always need some form of explanation that is connected to the very essence of the subject's soul or else the change will appear shallow, unneeded, and insignificant.

It's like the explanation of how someone as young as Harry Potter, who has not seen much of the magic of the world, can stand against and defeat a powerful magician like Voldemort: you only need to understand the difference at heart between those two to realize that Voldemort never stood a chance against an innocent heart.

The show IS supposed to be for kids but I, in my 27 year, was an easy win when I first laid eyes on it and understood its messages but, quite frankly, I never managed to understand this odd attachment to every change: this strange clinging to ever detail that makes some go on powerful hate rampages... there is more to life than a show and, as you stated wisely, the bronies make the community, not the show.

not being a brony, I may not bother much about the details but I do enjoy the show and many of the works based on it. many of these works were dedicated to showing an old Twilight with a full-grown Spike and this change, though suggestive that Twilight may become immortal (and, of course, not a god ) does not at all belittle the sentiments that were intended in such works nor does it make such works worthless anymore.

This is a beautiful comic, with some sensible arguments to back it up. For me, the most important thing is that the fourth season has been confirmed, meaning that this is a developmental move rather than an attempt to have a grand finale. As such, I think Twilight's "ascension" could be interesting. I won't pass judgment until I've seen the episode, after which I'll feel free to speculate what this could lead to in the next season.

I particularly enjoyed your speculation on potential storylines. As long as the creative team remains more or less intact for Season 4, I for one, won't be worrying. They've given us three amazing seasons, and this change to the show's dynamic could be just the shake-up they need to give us three more. As talented as everyone at DHX is, even the best writers need a change, and I'd rather this happened now, rather than as a desperate reaction to stop the show going downhill.

I wanted to thank you for this comic. While I am excitedly looking forward to how the change in Twilight is treated, there was this one, niggling fear I had with it.

Twilight was always my favourite character. Partly because I saw much of myself in her. So much so, in fact, that my friends often call me Bri-light Sparkle (My first name being Brian). My biggest fear was that I never did feel like I lived up to that name. Yet I could still relate so much to that struggling pony. However, the thought of her becoming a princess made me feel that she was taking a step that, I, myself was missing in my own life and struggling so very hard to find. Becoming so successful and earning this amazing thing.

I had this trepidation that I would lose my connection to Twilight, losing that beloved character I related to so much. But finally, after reading this comic, something clicked.

"Sometimes your friends may take a new path in life... Or perhaps success may find them when they least expect it..."

Those two lines finally shone light on something I was missing. Most of my friends I have here I know through my place of work, which I've been at for 4 years, most of my time in the town I currently live in. I have recently been offered another job. A more successful job, a job I have been interested in and aiming for for well over a year and a half. I am following that same path Twilight Sparkle is.

You've helped me reforge that connection. I have no more trepidation with the coming changes to the show. I wanted to thank you, so very much.

I wish I could show this to my friends, show them that I won't change. I won't forget them, and I CERTAINLY won't be leaving them.

Unfortunately, those poopyheads are avoiding spoilers, so I don't want to ruin it for them!

Anyone who thinks that Twilight being a Princess is guarenteed going to ruin things and that the staff dreads this move as much as they do... well, they have a letter to write to their new princess on friendship.

I always argue that this won't hurt the show and I always couple it with this little quote from Boast Busters.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Magic's got nothing to do with it."
"Your magic is a part of who you are, sugarcube, and we like who you are. We're proud to have such a powerful, talented unicorn as our friend."

I agree completely. There have been merchandise-driven changes to the show several times already, and the show's staff has almost always managed to make them work with quality storytelling.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders, Cadence, Shining Armor, Spike, and even Twilight, herself all represent character types that, on most other shows, fans despise. The argument could be made that Twilight herself is a well-written, far more sympathetic version of Wesley Crusher. But we love them on My Little Pony.

I'm going to relax and hope that the writers handle Princess Twilight with their usual deft grace. For all the entertainment they've given me over these three years, they certainly deserve it.

I personally don't give a fuck about Alicorn Twilight. I trust the writers, and everyone else should too.
