I've been reading a ton of Brandon Sanderson's books, nad when I first saw the mix of old and new, I really did think that a Shard had come to those rider's world, and they were all subsequently doomed because of it. DOOOOOOMED.

This is the planet where the galaxy dumps its toxic waste, which as it turns out, is great for growing oats. horses love them. Win win for everyone. LOL

Nope, not aliens, it is just the Galactic Imperium come to claim its rightful tribute. Which is delivered entirely in space potatoes, much to the Imperium's chagrin, as they all went bad on the hyperspace jaunt back to home base.
