Description Map out your influences! The bigger the image, the bigger the influence. The blank template is here: [link]

Batman '66: Pow! Bam! Zap! Adam West and co. introduced me to superheroes and comics with their crazy, colorful exploits. Years later, I realized there was a sly satire under those campy costumes.

Tyim Courts: My buddy Tyim was the first person to publish my work, and he introduced me to the wonderful world of self-published mini-comics. I owe him a lot. [link]

Steve Ditko: The guy behind Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, and the Question. Quirky, spooky, surreal. My inking style is a poor copy of his.

Mike Grell: Grell caught my eye at a young age with his sleek, sexy art on Legion of Super-Heroes, then really grabbed my imagination with his fantasy comic Warlord. The way he looked at sword & sorcery tropes with a somewhat jaundiced, cynical eye has influenced Glorianna.

Hanna-Barbera: They ruled the world of TV animation in my formative years. Shows like Scooby-Doo and the Flintstones are cultural touchstones, but it was their adventure shows, like Space Ghost, Super Friends, and Jonny Quest, that really left their mark on me.

Jaime Hernandez: One of my "gateway drugs" to the world of alternative comics, he merges classic cartooning chops with a punk rock sensibility. My Capella character is pretty much a straight swipe of Hopey Glass. Sorry about that, Xaime.

Robert E. Howard: The godfather of sword & sorcery, creator of Conan, Kull, and Solomon Kane. Stylists like Tolkien try to dazzle you with wordplay; Howard strips the adventure yarn down to its raw, earthy core.

Jack Kirby: The King of Comics! Captain America, Fantastic Four, Thor, New Gods... he pretty much invented the visual language of superhero comics.

Silver Age DC: The DC comics of the 1960s are full of imagination and whimsy, clever puzzle-plots, and noble heroes who win through brainpower as much as their fists.

Dave Sim: He pushed the boundaries of the comics medium with the endlessly inventive Cerebus, and his advocacy of creator-ownership and self-publishing inspired a whole generation of cartoonists to make their own path instead of towing the company line.

Star Trek: TV sci-fi at its finest. Smart, action-packed, funny, and never lost sight of the humanity among all the science.

Jim Starlin: The stylistic successor of Ditko, he added a heady mix of psychology and existential philosophy to his trippy visuals, making his Captain Marvel, Warlock, and Dreadstar comics both thrilling and mind-boggling.

Frank Thorne: This one's fairly obvious to anyone who's seen my Glorianna comics. He brought an exotic style and unabashed libido to Red Sonja, then took it to another level with Ghita and Lann. Every artist who's ever drawn a chick in chainmail owes a big debt to Thorne.

the sixty's batman will never be my favorite but it is just a little funny (even though I think Adam west is an embarrassment to batman).

You and I seem to share quite a few influences - Kirby (of course), the Hanna-Barbera adventure shows (represented in my map by Alex Toth who created and designed a lot of those characters), and, in a way, Howard (by way of Frazetta).

And I'm not surprised to see writer/artists like Ditko, Starlin and Hernandez in there as well.

I wasn't conscious of it when I was putting the list together, but it's true...a lot of my artistic idols are writers as well.

I just knew the old batman had to be in there. It's one of the few supers that I genuinely enjoy watching.
