Description An acrylic painting of the cast of Vagrant Story.

I've always wanted to do a painting for Vagrant Story, it being my favorite game of all time, and it has one of the best stories in or out of the gaming world. So, at last, I've completed one. It was also a some what hesitant return to acrylics for me (they very often have not gone well in the past), but I tried some new things with a bit of previous knowledge and I'm very happy with the result. The moulding paste was completely new (something from Ayami Kojima's book), but I have to say, it really is fun to work with. It's very possible this technique will be popping up more in my paintings. In fact, I'd count on it.
I also just love the composition and a few of the silent references to parts of the game (those familiar may recognize them). I hope you all like it too, even if you weren't a fan of the game (I realize there are many of those).

Sincerely,
J. M. DeSantis

Thanks for another comment.

I agree. There's no other to compare to Vagrant Story. I think I'm finally going to do another VS piece. It's been too long.

Now if I can just find my save data for the game, I might just pop it in my PS3 and...

Definitely. Though, unfortunately, Yasumi Matsuno (the creator) is no longer with Square-Enix; I'm not certain a sequel would be as good considering.

Also, not to let the cat out of the bag, but I just interviewed someone involved with Vagrant Story for a new website I co-created (www.game-flush.com ). I don't want to say who just yet, but the interview's posting is scheduled for October 8th and VS is briefly mentioned. So check it out.

In the meanwhile, hopefully I'll get a new VS piece together. I've already been doing a few sketches.

Thanks. It's funny how this painting came to be at all, because I had worked on it here and there, so that certain parts of the under-drawing were completed at different times (over the course of 8 month - something I am not at all used to doing). I tried to bring it together with the paint and hopefully it went well. Glad you like it. It is one of my own favorites. I really want to do some more Vagrant Story art, as, again, it is my favorite game, and I just love Ashley Riot (perhaps one of the greatest heroes of all time). We'll see. I do have other work I need to get done and one or two requests which have been on hold for too long, but who knows. The subject matter is just too tempting for me.

No no no. Don't get me wrong, I didn't work on it 8 months straight. All told it probably worked out to a three or four week project. I just kept doing the drawing and underpainting in sections over 7 months and spent the last month doing the actual painting.

Thank you. You have some nice work yourself. Yes moulding paste is the stuff Ms. Kojima uses to give her paintings that thick look. I gave it a try when I found her supposed method on Wikipedia (before all the suspicions of false information). Check out what they have to say: [link] Other websites carry the same info, so I have to suppose it's correct. They also say she uses acrylics, which makes sense. Moulding paste cannot be used with oils. Good luck with it if you try it, and thanks again.

Wow, you've sure put a lot of details in this.. I should try my hand at painting too, it's been a long time. What's moulding paste..? Is it the stuff in Kojima's work that makes the paint look so thick? I've always wanted to know what mediums she uses...
