Description An oil painting of Fingolfin and Morgoth.
Since I first read the Silmarillion I have been wanting to do this scene. It is perhaps one of my favorite from that book, and I was always surprised I had never seen any paintings of it. Ha ha.
Well, as it turned out, some time after I finished this piece I saw John Howe's much superior version on the cover of one of the history of Middle Earth books. Still, this is another one of those favorites for people who see it.

Sincerely,

well done! you should paint the meeting of Beren & Luthien in the glade of hemlocks

Thank you, and you're right, I should. It's been difficult for me to find the time and do a new Tolkien piece in a while (and honestly I'd like to revisit this scene of the Silmarillion). But, you never know, The Hobbit is coming out this year, and I'll be sure to re-read the books. Perhaps I'll get inspired to do one or two. Cheers!

Thank you. I'm really surprised this piece is still my second most popular (and most viewed piece overall). It's such an old painting and my style has improved and changed so much over the years.
Perhaps it's time to revisit Middle Earth and The Silmarillion then. Maybe I could even create a new Fingolfin vs Morgoth.

Now that's menacing.

I hated Morgoth (because of him being a good villain). This drawing is great.

Thank you. I am pleased you like the piece, even despite Morgoth's presence therein. Incidentally, I often find myself wondering which of the two Dark Lords I enjoyed (as one might enjoy villains) more: Sauron or Morgoth. Alas! it is often too difficult to decide.

No problem.

I don't hate hate Morgoth if that's what you think I meant. I really like him as a villain (which is why I hated him). But yes, it is hard to decide who is better, Sauron or Morgoth.

I understood your meaning perfectly, but thank you for the clarification. It's also good to see someone else who is familiar with Morgoth. It's a shame too many abandon the Silmarillion after only a chapter or two; honestly, I find that work almost the equal of The Lord of the Rings.

This is not the typical Morgoth reproduction and for this I must congratulate you on your great imagination, especially for the helmet. I believe I prefer Fingolfin however. Love the cape and hair, most especially.

Thank you for your compliments. Again, I would still like to create a new painting of this scene; my style and skills have developed much since I produced this. Yet it still continues to be the most popular of my early works.

Thank you. I still find people do enjoy this painting. It's perhaps one of my favorite scenes in the Silmarillion and likely one of the most powerfully written. Still, I would enjoy producing a new version someday. Though, perhaps I'll find myself so fortunate as to be hired to do so by the publisher. One can only hope.

Thanks. I'm glad you think so, but, for some reason, my gallery here seems to be getting a slow start (on the viewer and commenter end of things). Hopefully that will all change soon. Either way, its always good to know your work is appreciated. Glad you liked the piece.

Wow, and thank you very much. Actually I am a little surprised no one has commented on this piece yet either considering it is (currently) the most viewed piece in my gallery. I'm really glad you like it. All I can say is I hope more people catch on to it in the future. Thanks again.
