Description
'And at that moment, as if by a miracle, the sick no longer died, and the stifling shadow of the vampire vanished with the morning sun.' - from the Alpha Video DVD release of F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)Submitted for the 2007 deviantART Be Afraid contest.
Inks (brush and dip pen) on bristol paper.
I almost thought, with all the other work I have this month, I would not be able to submit a piece. However, how could I pass up a contest for my favorite holiday? What's more, it gave me the chance to at last take a little time and create an image for this wonderful film.
Graf Orlok is the greatest screen vampire of all time, and verily one of the greatest outside of the realm of cinema. The fact that this film has stood the test of time (being released in the 1920s, and silent at that), even despite its being ordered destroyed by Bram Stoker's widow shortly after its original release, is a testament to its superiority in the the realm of both cinema and vampire lore.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Oh Schreck did a wonderful job. Especially with the pose and stare. o.O
And this just made me remember the feeling I got while watching the movie.

Thank you. I'm glad I was able to capture a bit of that in this piece. I've loved this film since I was a child, and I hope to do a few other Orlok pieces in the future.

mmmh...i am not sure that Orlock is really dead, because:
-true vampires are not burned by sunlight(even if it weakens them),
-he had just consumed a victim, so he was at the maximum of his vampiric power.
so, probably he turned into mist form and escaped.

How wonderful it would be if that were true.

Yeah. The death of Orlok was disappointing.
As for the 70's remake, I hated the thing. On the other hand, it seems to have been widely well recieved and liked by critics and the public. Personally I thought Klaus Kinski's portrayal of Dracula (the names were changed back for the remake) was not at all terrifying, and thus largely inferior to Schreck's Orlok. But, if you wish, see the film for yourself and decide how you feel. I for one, I suppose, am in the minority of people who disliked the 70's version. Though I am sure none find it to be superior, whether they enjoyed it or not.

Yes, I didn't imagine it would be very good. Remakes can seldom ever compare to the originals. I heard there's going to be another remake of it made but I don't any of the details. I don't think I'll bother to see the 70's version, I'll probably just be disappointed. Thanks for the comment!

You're welcome. No, I wouldn't see the 70's remake, but I don't want to tell you what to do. Though, I would be interested in knowing a bit about this new remake. That could be good, if the right people are involved. Unfortunately, it may still not be comparable to the original, but I think another good vampire film could come out of it (there are disappointingly so few, I feel).

That's very true. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose.
If you go onto google and search 'nosferatu project poster' you can see the poster for the movie. That's about the only info I can find on it!

Orlok is definetley the creepiest version of Dracula. Wonderful picture.

Thank you, and I agree. No vampire compares to the terror that was Count Orlok. Even the 1970s remake did not compare to the original. I do not know how else to say it but that no horror film character has ever affected me in the way, or so deeply as Orlok.

Nice!
Nosferatu creeped the hell out of me.
Madly designed character he is.

I agree. It's amazing how well done the make-up job was on Max Schrek back in 1921 (when the film was shot); to this day it still holds as being more real than most of the computer animated characters of today's films, or even the clever other ways creatures have been brought to life over the years since Nosferatu. As for myself, yes, I was also frightened by Count Orlok as a child, and he holds the record still as being to sole monster to affect me so.

Oh yes. I learned all about ax Schrek and the film in my Sci Fi/Horror films class last semester. What even cooler is the movie "Freaks" where no make up was needed
