Description Watercolours and inks on watercolour paper

Yet another Lovecraft piece. I had the idea to paint a variation of this piece as a cover for 'Planet Lovecraft Magazine' when they were still in print. Then, when searching for ideas for my sketchbooks for the New York Comic Con this year, I decided to finally put the idea on paper.

It's not often I do humourous work when not creating art for Game-Flush.com, so it was fun to do something a little different. Also, if you're going to the New York Comic Con this weekend (October 13 - 16, 2011), don't forget to stop by Artist Alley table L8. Enjoy!

Hi! We're a group of journalism students from Spain, and our final year project consists of a RPG magazine. We would use your drawings ("Cthulhu taking tea") to illustrate an article about Cthullu evolution. Would you agree to cooperate with us? The drawing will only be used for the article and will not be used for any commercial purpose.
You can send us the image and your permission to: revista.enrolate@gmail.com
Thank you very much for you attention.

I'm a sucker for this kind of 'pleasant everyday oddies'. Good work!

Thank you. I love doing strange yet humorous pieces and something about Cthulhu sitting and drinking tea struck me. Originally I wanted to do this as a cover for Planet Lovecraft Magazine (which I'd had two stories published in), but sadly they are no longer with us. Glad you like the piece.

What a beautiful mustache...
And may I ask what kind of paper you used for this? (g/m², surface texture?) ...because my ink never, absolutely NEVER behaves on whatercolor paper.

Pen is always tricky on top of watercolours. If it helps, I used Microns for this (though sometimes I honestly do use dip pen) and Sumi ink for the blocks of shadow.

As for the paper, I went back to the piece, and it's definitely Cold Press. Based on the thickness, I believe it came from my pad of Strathmore 400 Series 140lb Watercolour Paper (I like the thicker stuff). I hope that helps.

Also, thanks for noticing the mustache. It was an extra little touch I wasn't sure anyone would notice.
