The new text makes it MUCH easier to read!

Of course stock brushes aren't a substitute for actually painting the background, but it's better than nothing and at least gets people thinking about a WHOLE image and not just "character standing in white void."

I may do another one. But seriously I can get these backgrounds done in like 15 minutes, that one maybe a little more. With so many tools and brushes, not having a background is no excuse any more. Heck, I even have premade ones people can use.

This specially helps out, because so many show hosts got a stick up their bums about reusing the same background. So you can move things around to give more of a panoramic view of their arena or something.

At least a drawn one (even with pre-fab brushes) looks a bit better than slapping in a photo background.

I don't see an issue with reusing a background for the same show, but I personally draw each one, mostly because I'm often working traditionally rather than digitally and there's not much choice in that instance.

Backgrounds aren't nearly as scary as many people think they are, just stick to simple, quiet, and blurry and they'll do fine!

I find it slightly amusing that you use the RBG (?) color codes in the tutorial, I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that before.

LOL I'm a dork like that. That way people can 're create' the same thing. I do that with a lot of my tutorials for digi. Figure if I tell you what pencils I use for colored pencil, might as well do the same for digi.

its nice but its hard to read with the white text on the soft green. I'd suggest using a darker color for the font when the bg is bright

This is an awesome tutorial! There's just one thing... I'm having a lot of trouble reading the white text you use in the image itself to describe the steps. I'm not sure how hard it would be... but could you possibly make it a darker color? I dunno, maybe black? Or instead of leaving the background the deviantART-grey, give it another color so it stands out? Then I could focus more on the the steps and how you did them rather than squinting.

I dunno, just a suggestion. I absolutely love, and I mean LOVE the tutorial itself! It's so basic and easy, anyone can do it! And it looks SO good! I know this is going to help a lot of people! I hope you'll allow me to add it to my horse-tutorial group so it can reach even more people!

This is a wonderful tutorial, but the white text causes a good bit of eye strain against DA's grey-green background. It might be worth making another version with darker text?

I'd have to agree with you there. Or perhaps removing the transparency and inserting a darker background?

i trully want to use the brushes, but sadly, they dont work for SAI. I also have gimp, so ill try that I guess.

Shayla-Estate In reply to AmigoGirl [2011-09-13 17:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Gimp will accept most brushes. I use Gimp and brushes myself. You'll have to remember to move any brushes you download from the "download" folder of your computer to the right folder for Gimp on your computer. I can tell you how to do this if you need me to. I just thought I'd let you know that you'll be able to use brushes if you use Gimp.
