Description There's now a part two! You can find it here

I've had a number of people ask for a background tutorial now, so I decided to make this. It's not exactly a tutorial, I don't think, more something to help you out with breaking the process into steps. Although I only made a landscape here, you can use these exact same steps for making a background

You can see the finished background here .

If you have any questions or tips of your own (whether it's on background or how to make a better tutorial ) don't hesitate to leave them below in the comments!

Any tutorials you guys want to see in the future? How to draw trees?

I really liked this. It didn't jump in too far, nor did it glaze over so many of the 'simpler' things that many tutorials tend to. Thank you for making this :3

This will help soooo much! I've always had so much trouble with backgrounds. So far this is probably the most detailed tutorial I've found.

Trees pls ;-;

This is rly helpful. I subconsciously do the thirds thing but I think now I'll try to more consciously work with it. Ugghhh I think my patience is my biggest issue but it's nice to see it broken down into steps so it looks more manageable xD

Trees are so much fun I probably will even if no one else is interested :')

Usually people will separate things in thirds since it looks nice, even if they're not thinking about it, but that means they most often will make just the middle third active Thinking about it and consciously deciding to place details in different places (in the sixths, even, which I didn't have a chance to mention cause of the lack of space I had) can work out to be pretty cool

ASJLHKAJDFLKJC this is such a perfect landscape painting 8D I love the colours you used! It's so pretty ;U; That mountain range far away! ♥♥

what I find immensely helpful to keep in mind is not to think of it as a "background" in terms of something that's just a nice-to-have addition but as scenery that can be just as important as the subject you're drawing. Something you need for setting the scene.

And the golden ratio is just as valuable as thirds! Or sixths. Whatever ratio that doesn't put things in the middle. xD Or, ok, putting things in the middle can be cool too.
What I mean, there's a lot of tools for composition that are worth trying out when you grow weary of thirds c:

Yay, I'm glad you like it! The sheep look a little... funny, but I guess that's alright :')

Yeah, I was considering adding in the part about the sixths as well but then space started to run out so I just kept it to thirds to keep things simple I find that putting details differently in the vertical thirds/sixths is easier to do than the horizontal ones (ex. activing just the left third), but maybe that's me without much experience
