Description Not a great title...sorry!

When I last went to England we visited an old forest called Waggoners Wells and I was inspired to do this piece! Lots of green, as you can see and I saw all these lovely shamrock type leaves with delicate white flowers growing around moss covered tree stumps. I have no green thumb, so I have no idea what they are called.

Unfortunately...I cannot stand the background of this piece!! Looks as if it were cut out and glued on. Any watercolour experts out there, please give me some advice on how to make the backgound look as if it belonged to the painting!

It was my pleasure! Nice to know I'm not the only weirdo out there who obsesses over certain colors

This is so lovely, the beautiful contrasting tints of green mixed with the softness of the composition truly pulls the viewer towards the allure of the mystical. I don't feel like the background has a cut out feel to it, in fact I think the lack of details and fading really bring out your foreground work,

PS: Ok, I didn't manage to make the icons show up. In my gallery, look at Limberlost and Tomato Patch. Those are the examples I tried to send you. Sorry.

Thanks so much...i'll remember these pieces when I next attempt such a painting. I need to learn not to pack the whole painting with as many details as possible...I just don't seem able to stop.

Overall, a very charming piece! I love the foreground, as you said. The figure, mushrooms and clovers are really working well. As for advice for the background:

When I do a background, I start off the piece with a wash. In this case, I would use a yellow wash, since the piece is very warm. Then, as the trees go into the background, they should get lighter, bluer, and less detailed. I hardly ever underpaint a background if it is outside and sunny, since it makes the background too heavy. See :thumb35573682: and thumb24099237: for examples of this. Hope this helps! Again, your work is great! This is just advice for how to improve the background on your next one. Your colors are very rich, and overall, this is a strong piece!

My advice on the background: maybe you should add a little more detail, so that it doesn't look as if it's very far away. And maybe the spaces inbetween the trees should be darker (it's a forest after all) instead of lighter. Just some thoughts I like this painting a lot, the detail on the leaves and the tree on the foreground is amazing !! Keep up the good work !

I've sat on moss-covered logs before - it's really soft, like nature's couch. XD

This is, as always, completely amazing. I think the background looks just fine, myself.

the foreground IS wonderful and the whole mood is great I don't know if i'm an expert yet but all I can say for the background is with the first tree in the middle take some paint with a dryer brush and put some fine detailing for bark work and i'd punch out some of the foliage with the same idea also, strengthen the deep background trees with a darker glase of brown - it's really a lovely painting and I see it finished but other than some minor detailing with a dry brush it's almost perfect

Thanks a lot! I'll give it a go...but I need a break from that painting for a while or I will go crawling up the wall! I'm a 'little ' over critical when it comes to my work!

oh don't worry about it I completely understand what you mean by taking a break from a piece. Sometimes after a few weeks the painting looks better and you become more refreshed to paint it again

That's what I felt like when I walked into that forest...there even was a house on the other side of a little river with a family living in it. Oh, to be able to walk out your back door into a magical forest! I'd probably turn into a hermit!

great work and coloring... a way to combine background and main figures could be to work out the shadows (figures on background, flowers and butterfly on figure)...
