I have a map tutorial out, which should help! But yes, maps can be a lot of work depending on how exactly you're doing it and how detail/realism-oriented you are. Typically take me 20-40 hours.

Great work! I love the muted colors and the toned-down mountain ranges. The separate parts really work well together.

Thanks a lot My friend wanted the focus of the map to be the political boundaries, mostly, which is why the geographical features aren't as notable.

Ive always had trouble colouring regians or countries, there doesnt seem to sufficient layer type to use. Got any ideas yourself Jo?

Have you checked my tutorial? I typically use Multiply, Overlay, Colour, or Colour Burn - remember you can tweak a layer's opacity as well as its blending mode, so if something is too bright or harsh or strong, you can tone it down.

Hmmmm didnt see that one before
I unsaturate my map too so that multiply colours wouldnt look so distorted either

Hehe, nope, sorry! Especially for a map - can't really afford to spend 20-30 hours on something and not get paid.

I could quite possibly send you a bloodthirsty llama too.

Well, anyway. Let's stop joking for a second here.
Since you didn't want to help me with a map, what about a critique on my own map then? It needs something, I can tell that much. The question is what though.
Here's a link. -> [link]

I think that's actually looking really good! Looks like something from an RTS game, like Civilizations or something.
I'm not sure what advice I'll be able to give, really. My style is more reminiscent of old world maps, stylized like an ancient map, or something out of Lord of the Rings, while yours is much more realistic and detailed. The mountains looks great. Maybe if you added a little bit more variation to the grassy (green) regions? Instead of simply having a gradient from mostly-flat green to mostly-flat gold, maybe try texturing the various regions a bit more? Depending on the scale, though, that may be difficult. But y'know... making the gold look more sandy, or the green look more grassy.
The black lines and red squares are slightly detracting, but also are what make it look so much like a genuine RTS map - depending on what they are supposed to represent, you could try to redraw it in the same style you've done the rest of the map in?

NuclearD00d In reply to jocarra [2010-05-23 23:22:19 +0000 UTC]
Ah that. The black lines are placeholders for my roads. The red squares are placeholders for my houses. I've got a terrible memory so I need them to be there to remind me constantly.
Been starting to add houses somewhat though. Anyway, here's a early planning picture. [link] It was before i added the mountains. Got a bigger version uploaded here on deviant art actually. [link]
It's older, but it's alright when it comes to showing scale and the amount of detail. Got any tutorials or something for the grass btw? I would appreciate it if you had. XD
Not sure how to improve the desert though.

Argh, I'm bored and i need something to work with. XD
I asked some swedish dudes in one of the groups i'm in about it and the only real response i got was "Need more mountains". Now i'm unsure if i should have more mountains or not. The weather effects and water animations will be a real pain, the shadow effects will be even more so. Had i not been so bored so frequently, I don't think this map would have ever been created. Btw, this is actually for a rpg. A post apocalyptic steampunk comedy RPG.
So you have nothing to add? Damn, I can say it's not perfect, or is it only i because I've been looking at it more than anyone, that i find more errors than anyone else? Argh, it needs something.. Hmmm.. I still don't know what yet. Ideas, stop being stuck in my head and get out into my map. It's like that movie.. close encounter of the third kind, where i got a idea imprinted in my head and I gotta get it out. XD

This is great. When you draw the mountains, do you draw them individually? It's really good, I'm trying to find good inspirations for when I draw my own map
Must've taken you ages to do that outline!!

jocarra In reply to Lolipopgi [2010-03-14 01:18:29 +0000 UTC]
*nods* Yep, I did all the mountains individually
And yes, the outline can take quite a while

Hi there
I hope you read this because I am interested in cartography and would value your answers (and maybe give some ideas?)
What is the scale on this relative to the size of the globe it's on? Which follows on to, what kind of projection are you using? If this is a 'full-Earth-sized' map from pole to pole done in Mercator projection onto a cylinder, you need to consider that folk living in the far north and south are going to be pretty unhappy with the deformed shape of their countries as the Mercator projection gets dangerously wrong towards the poles.
The Mercator projection usually works well enough for individual countries, even small continents. Otherwise it may be a good idea to try another projection, if you want accuracy in the farther regions.
I am also interested how the isolated kingdom (Watazumi?) got that way. Usually tectonic plates don't shrink absolutely equally! Spreading ridges tend to have a bias to one end or the other so you end up with more-or-less fan shaped spreading patterns (disregarding obvious coastline shaping kinks). I'm also having issues buying it as 'a great big river that goes all the way from sea to sea round the country'. Rivers tend to only flow one way (with exceptions such as tidal creeks).
I'm in the process of geologically modelling my own world. It's a full globe so I'm going to be representing separate continents in individual Mercators and the full globe as an interrupted sinusoidal projection. I made the original by paper-machein a round balloon and drawing on it (starting with tectonic plates and their relative motion in the recent geologic past).
