Description
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.Now for something completely different! This came about actually because I'm working on another ER cover illustration where the art director requested a party of adventurers fighting a giant caterpillar (sounds weird, but it makes sense in context :b), then realised there should probably be a bestiary entry to go with it!
So here we have the tentatively named elephant grub, a large voracious herbivore that can only be sustained by places like the vast, bountiful fields native to Skidi Glider lands. The Skidi, however, are fiercely protective of their beloved flower fields and lush crops, and regularly work together to keep the elephant grubs from dealing too much damage to their fields.

I love it, reminds me of a Magic the Gather card artwork for "Giant Caterpillar", I'm envisioning a Roc or Rukh swooping in snatching it for a snack LOL! Great job

I can't wait to see the trailer for this game...
By the way, that's a giant caterpillar. I wonder how it looks like when it becomes an adult...

Heh, unfortunately, Endless Realms isn't a video game, it's a pen and paper tabletop game, so probably no trailer
As for the caterpillar, not sure! Sort of think it just stays in larval form since it's being so successful, and if there isn't enough food to get this big, it turns into a caterpillar and flies away. So no giant butterfly probably :b

Oh! Sorry for calling it an actual game, but such concept for it is actually interesting; I've never heard of a pen and paper tabletop game before...
Also, that's okay if there's no giant butterfly; besides, you could make a butterfly based dragon instead...

Oh, sure you have. Probably just haven't heard the term used for it before :b Tabletop games are like board games and card games, like Monopoly and Risk and poker and Magic: The Gathering and Settlers of Catan, but its an RPG like Dungeons & Dragons, the most famous tabletop RPG - there are lots of others, like Pathfinder and World of Darkness and Shadowrun, and tabletop game versions of famous "worlds" like Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Cthulhu, and so on. They're also called pen and paper games because instead of being displayed on a computer screen calculated automatically, players and the game master keep track of stuff themselves the old-fashioned way :b

It's super cute I want to ride it and feed it a warehouse full of lettuce.

Are the grubs edible, I wonder? Kill 'em, and eat 'em; save the crops and feed the clan all in one go. If not edible, are any parts usable - can one tan the hide, perhaps? Maybe the legs have hard chitin that is useful for armor? If all else fails, do they make good compost to feed the plants they were eating?

Yes, I think they are! At least, the art director seemed to suggest the Skidi probably have a big feast after defeating them with lots of delicious grub-meat, soooo, I think that's a pretty strong yes
lol, yeah, at the very very least, they probably do make good compost :b

Haha, yup :b The fact it's a herbivore doesn't help much when it eats all your bloody food!
