Description Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.

Have you ever been to the shore, shortly after the tide has gone out, and the beach is covered in sheets of seaweed, and birds and other animals are busy foraging upon the plants and sealife that were washed up?  Do you know what bull kelp looks like?  Its this long, thick, tough, snake-like slimey rope with a bulb at the end - they're great for swinging at your friends and snapping like a bull whip!  Anyway... Bull kelp used to freak my husband out as a child, and he'd dream about it grabbing him, and dragging him down into the surf to drown, or other, more terrible things.

Turns out, a lot of childhood terrors make great monster fodder!

This is our carnivorous bull kelp, a bull kelp mimic, if you will - a carnivorous plant that disguises itself as harmless, inanimate bull kelp washed onto shore with the rest of the seaweed, and waits for foraging creatures to come along...

We're expecting a number of jokes about this one, for various reasons, but I still think it's a great concept :b

Well, I've begun writing stories.  And this looks like a really fun thing to have as part of your fauna.

Go for it   ER species are considered "open species" by the developers - people can make fan-art/fan-fiction/original characters and things with them in it all they want, provided it's not done commercially

Hmm, in that case, perhaps I will think about it, heh, but I hadn't planned on anything.

Had to read a little about the algae, now i know what you mean.
They would be a nice little trap for sure and creepy as hell. XD
Good idea!

I could definitely make a few NSFW comments about what that looks like.  Just remember, the last time my mind was 'in the gutter', I got altitude sickness!

Other than that, oh yeah, definitely nightmare fodder!  Well done!

Thanks!  Well, I suppose really the thanks should go to Casey, since that's where the idea really came from.  The name of the proposed monster was even jokingly named "Casey's nightmare beach monster."

As far as inappropriate commentary goes:  Sperm.  Penis.  Poop.  Those were the three we were expecting, anyway :b

Sort of tangentially related but otherwise random fact: barnacles have the biggest penis:body size ratio in the animal kingdom :V  To make up for their sedentary lifestyle, barnacles evolved extraordinarily long penises, so that they could "travel" to other areas and spread their genes there rather than being limited to what's immediately next door.  ((I have a B.Sc. in biology, and of all the facts I remembered, this had to be one of them :V))

You -and Casey - are quite welcome.

The first two words featured in my NSFW thoughts, yes.

*Gigglefits* Of COURSE that is one of the facts that you remembered!  It's so 'off-the-wall' it has to stick in your mind.  Quite logical, too, once you think about it.  Doubt it will become a popular reference, though.  Guys are still gonna compare themselves to horses, because horses are much more visually pleasing than a barnacle.   (Never mind that even a miniature stallion, weighing in at roughly 160Lbs/80kilos still has a longer penis than most human males; and while it may not be much bigger around on the shaft, the 'bell' is definitely bigger around, measuring about 3in/7.2cm across.)

Horse penises are kinda freaky, gotta admit :b  Then again, frankly, to humans, most animal penises are kinda freaky :b

Ah, brings back fond memories of swimming in the frigid northeastern oceans and chasing people while covered in heaps of kelp and seaweed...

I remember swimming in the ocean and like seaweed would touch you, and i would freak out being like "oh knows something is going to eat me!" then realize it was seawead or kept....
but now i realize this really will eat me... the ocean is no longer safe for me

This reminds me of a game I've watched a walk-through of. It makes the game even more terrifying if you sub this in.

Awesome! Well done!

Thanks!

The Visitor I believe it's called. It's actually about an extra terrestrial life form that starts as a worm and eats things in order to gain their abilities. It's gory and bloody but a clever concept.

It looks like a wurm with large amount of fangs. Looks funny, but scary as well. Nothing nice to meet in water with this.

jocarra In reply to dragonis1 [2015-02-02 00:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, we figured people would think it's a bit silly-looking, but it's essentially just a mimic of www.blackrockresort.com/images… except it's got its leaves on the "tail" end rather than the "head."

dragonis1 In reply to jocarra [2015-02-02 20:50:34 +0000 UTC]

If it's leaves are on it's tail, then how can it remain on one place in sea?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to dragonis1 [2015-02-02 22:06:29 +0000 UTC]

It uses its leafy parts as psuedopods for crawling/grappling if necessary aside from using its main body, so it can use them to grab hold of other things to anchor it in place.  I also imagine it can swim, whereas normal algae can't.

I see ... what if it's flooded to a beach as on the picture? Can it just move back to the sea?

jocarra In reply to dragonis1 [2015-02-03 02:05:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I imagine it hangs out or swims around while the tide is in, and waits on the beach for foragers when the tide is out.
