Description
RIGHT CLICK TO LOOPA little swordplay animation... Rotoscoping is fun... Yep.
Right now, it's only in its most crude form - I was going to make it longer, but I thought this was an appropriate place to end it. I hope to make this into a proper animation of Jayli some day. Y'know, properly drawn with colour and a background... *sighs wistfully* Oh well...
~6 hours. 65 frames rotoscoped. Drawn in Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, tested in Microsoft GIF Animator, presented in Flash. 20.

lol you rotoscoped it lol.. I got kinda scared there for a second. I certainly can't comprehend moves like that just yet lol... rotoscope maybe great as a learning tool...

Rotoscoping is an excellent learning tool. It really makes one aware of the level of awareness an animator has to have. A lot of people don't think about where their entire body is moving and what it is doing and why, and if you think about it and still aren't sure, rotoscoping helps. It's used all the time in cartoons, and its digital analogue, motion capture, is also commonly used. I only wish I could animate this well on my own - I can to an extent, but certainly not this.

Hehe, yes, it does X3 You see, the viewer is guiled into a false sense of security, and then STAB!!!
Sorry. Had to get that out of my system.
The Microsoft GIF Animator is a free downloadable program. Adobe PhotoShop and Macromedia Flash you technically have to go out and spend big bucks on, but it is quite possible to find ways of acquiring the program for free... but we're not supposed to talk about that here

Hehe, anything can be done with the MS GIF Animator! It all depends on the animator (d'oh!)

That really means a lot, especially coming from you. You've done some fantastic animations yourself, and all of them were probably done completely freehand, while this was done using rotoscoping. I'd like to add finishing touches to it, make it definitively mine, y'know? But frame-by-frame is so much work

Thank you very much The smoothness is due to the technique.

I was gonna say that it really reminded me of the Linkin Park video (but it's already been said!) so I'll just say that it's cool 'cause it looks really smooth everywhere (even when I ignore the sword & just look @ the body) which seems like a big feat to me!

Rotoscoping sounds neat, I've heard about it in movies...I think Linkin Parks "Breaking the Habbit" video does that. Awesome job! ^^

Rotoscoping is really neat It's like cheating, but it really isn't - it's a lot of work, and then there's making the animation your own, by giving it more depth and character (I still have to do that X3).

This is from the martial arts documentary on the Discovery Channel, wasn't it? Still though, it's very fluid and just like the original. Nice job!

Yeah, it made for really nice rotoscoping material. It was impossible to capture all the frames, though, and I still need to finish it X3

Thank you - I feel partly bad taking credit for it, though - it is just rotoscoping, but then again, rotoscoping is a legitimate technique. It's been used in many movies to make animation, just as you said, "Swift, fast, natural."

Oh, also, it looks like a series of practice moves, more then like she was fighting someone, as if she was, her sword would be encountering resistance, and bouncing off of things. It would be even nice to see just a refined line drawing sequence of this, without the color and shading that, I am sure, would take forever! And I agree, quite hypnotic.

jocarra In reply to Eolhin [2005-05-31 19:25:01 +0000 UTC]
Mmhmm, it is supposed to be just her practicing. It'd be too hard for me to animate other figures into it
And yeah, I was going to do a line drawing version after this one, but I doubt I'll be doing it any time soon.

Very cool! I like how the light trail follows the sword point. It is also interesting how the figure seems to not become female until close to the end. I wish I could draw anywhere near that well! I look forward to seeing the finished animation, when you get to that.

jocarra In reply to Eolhin [2005-05-31 19:27:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I didn't bother making the sex obvious until the closeup when it was necessary, although the gender could be guessed by the form of the figure, perhaps.

Wow, rotoscoping. Never heard that before. This is very amazing. o_O I played it like 40 times, and it still amazes me. It's soo cool with the sword and all, so precise... It's like hypnotic too! I love the white ribbon-thing! I wonder how'd that look with clothing on, or a full body. The close up too is very neat, goodness you're so good! I was just browsing through your gallery and had to see this.... *loves animations* :3
D'ya mind if I fav it?

jocarra In reply to SnowTigerCub [2005-05-28 09:35:11 +0000 UTC]
Rotoscoping? Yeah, it's basically motion capture, except frames are redrawn manually, one by one.
Yes, it is quite hypnotic ... I haven't had the time to start working on perfecting the sketch though, so... yeah. Hopefully I will someday soon!
