A little swordplay animation... Rotoscoping is fun... Yep.

Right now, it's only in its most crude form - I was going to make it longer, but I thought this was an appropriate place to end it. I hope to make this into a proper animation of Jayli some day. Y'know, properly drawn with colour and a background... *sighs wistfully* Oh well...

~6 hours. 65 frames rotoscoped. Drawn in Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, tested in Microsoft GIF Animator, presented in Flash. 20.

You could use videos off the TV, too, but it will be a lot harder to do it.

wow, it's very smooth and clean. Good job! I must add it to my favorites
If I may ask, what did you base the rotoscopy on? did you take a video of someone doing that or did you have an external source? If you took the video of someone you know, it'll be great! you can exploit him/her and have hundreds or little Jayli animations, then a full length movie and then the world!!!

jocarra In reply to cocowash [2005-05-24 03:29:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Heheh... I used a video of extreme martial arts demonstrations on the Discovery Channel for my reference, although I do have a friend who is into martial arts who could be a model if I needed him.

Err... I don't think I'd be able to animate enough for a whole movie, though! And certainly not enough to take over the world...

Thank you That's cool - martial arts is one thing I never did as a child, and I regret it. I'd take a class, but I hardly have time, and I also get really embarrassed easily in front of others, especially when doing something physical...

*stares in amazement*
The movement looks beautiful and perfectly natural... Did you draw all the frames separately or what does that "rotoscoping" mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to smuli [2005-05-24 03:35:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Yes, I drew 65 separate frames, one by one. Rotoscoping is basically manually-drawn, frame-by-frame motion capture.

smuli In reply to jocarra [2005-05-24 08:29:09 +0000 UTC]

So you drew a frame in about *does some calculating* ...five minutes... Pretty well with so accurate positioning!

Thank you very much! Hehe, yeah, I like the white trail, too - besides looking cool, it also helps the viewer keep track of the sword.

......If I did an animation of a person like that It would look really bad>_> an animal is another story...I wish I had flash ;-; it looks like it would be fun^_^

Thank you very much! Yeah, I still want to try an animation with an animal... haven't tried yet...

Oh, and I didn't actually MAKE this in Flash. I made each frame in Adobe PhotoShop and animated it in the Microsoft GIF Animator... but I decided to upload it as Flash, because it's a nicer format.

Woah, that's really cool. O_O Huzzah for animation! It looks really good, even when it's only this far. Very smooth animation. Ha, i have to say though- the white...ness that follows the sword makes it look kind of like one of those ribbon dancer things. XD Very amusing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to gins [2005-05-20 05:38:35 +0000 UTC]

*LOL* Yep, the character is supposed to be agile - I always imagined her as having the grace of a martial artist combined with a dancer. The white stuff is supposed to help the viewer keep track of where the sword tip is, but it's also supposed to be suggestive of that dancer-like grace combined with magical ability as well ... So yeah, I know - it is kind of amusing X3

Thank you very much for the comment

if you animated it in a gif animator... why upload it as flash?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to DampeS8N [2005-05-20 05:33:28 +0000 UTC]

*chuckles* Good point. I should modify that in the description... I tested it originally in a GIF animator, and it totally destroyed some of the frames... so I put it through Flash and it worked much better.

rotoscoping is hard x_X

Very good, you have some really good talent, you could be a great anime artist or something for a job ^__^

Hehe, I find rotoscoping to be a lot easier than trying to come up with something like this on one's own X3...

Thank you very much for the comment!
