TRIPARTITVS - the Lost World of Paruda
MUNDVSTERTIVSTRIVM

"Many would describe the people of Raziel as primitive in their ways and antiquated in their beliefs, but few would describe the Raziel-aiya as without richness of culture, for theirs is filled with the lore and tantalizing secrets of days long forgotten.

"The Raziel-aiya are divided into two people, the Niyotael and the Ahghaeri. While the eleven tribes of Ahghaeri are known to have given rise to both daughter-nations Aldyr and Barrow long ago, it is the twelfth tribe, the Niyotael, that best keeps the dark mystique that characterizes this ancient people. Most easily distinguished from their plains-dwelling brothers by their darker complexion, ebony hair, and the fact that they are most at home within the jungles and forests of the deepest wild, the Niyotael often serve to symbolize the passion of the Raziel-aiya for the pursuit of spiritual balance and oneness with the elements of both Sun and Moon, as symbolized in their religion by the Scale of Raziel.

"Razielians have always dwelled in what wilderness remains in the world, adopting either a nomadic lifestyle or building small, self-sufficient villages, most surviving tribes cling to the region known as Paruda, hailed as the Cradle of Humanity and place to which their lord Raziel descended to give to them the Three Gifts. However, little of this place remains in the worlds New and Ancient - following the Battle of Korah and Great Division, Paruda separated to create the Third World of Three. It is thought that the true paradise of the Raziel-aiya is preserved in this Third World, until then ignored, but now lost to all forever, save the Guardian..."

An excruciatingly detailed old-world style map of the Lost World Paruda, the third and last world making up the Tripartitus, the three-part universe featuring in my story of the same name, The Tripartitus.

All fonts were made from scratch in Illustrator, except the "Greater Juubai/Niyotael/etc." font.

All graphics were also made from scratch in Illustrator, including the triquetra in the top left, which alone took about three hours to make absolutely perfect.

Yes, all mountains and trees were hand-drawn individually.

~30 hours Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator CS3.

*twitches* Wow. Just... wow. Now I wish I could find a simple tutorial on how to use Adobe Illustrator. I have it, I just am utterly lost on how to use it.

This is incredible!

Learning Illustrator requires a traditional artist to think outside the box.

Using the brush tool, you can draw lines like you would in any other program, with pen sensitivity if you have it. But the thing to get your head around is that they aren't lines made of pixels, they're lines made with vectors, which are all edittable.

Now that you have your line, you can "tweak" it using the clear arrow tool (the white one can select the individual points on a line, while the black one is the general selection tool like in Photoshop), and you can move the different points around to edit the line. Additionally, curves on the line are defined by tangents, which you can lengthen or shorten, and change the angle of, and you can add more by using the "Add" function of the pen tool (it's a pen with a plus sign next to it).

Those are pretty much all the tools I use to do lineart in AI.

Other basics that I find useful are grouping lines together, so you don't have a zillion separate ones to deal with. You can do this by selecting them and pressing CTRL+G, and ungroup by SHIFT+CTRL+G, I believe.

Layers work the same, pretty much, as in PS.

You should fiddle around with how the brushes work in AI, too. Calligraphy brushes are basically the same kind of brushes used in PS. Art brushes and whatnot are very useful tools once you get the hang of them and learn what they can be used for.

For instance, for some of the text, I needed the letters to curve around and didn't want to do it manually for all of them. So I wrote the word in a straight line using the fonts I had made, then selected the word, and then created a brush out of it. Then when you draw a line with that brush, it'll write the word in the shape/direction of your line.

I found this useful, for instance, when I was a biology textbook illustrator. I'd draw a strand of DNA, and then turn it into a brush, and then I could draw the strands interacting and bending and whatnot, because I had a brush of it and didn't have to redraw it in different shapes manually.

Hope that helped

Wow. I had no idea what illustrator did and now you laid it out perfectly.

This map is awesome. If I ever become a fantasy author, expect a call someday. Or if I become a textbook writer. That's much more unlikely though.

so after seeing this I was inspired to (re)do my own map for the world my story takes place in... it didn't come out nearly as good as this one, lol! I guess I need to look at old maps and try again.
Anyways, this is lovely! Thanks for the inspiration kick-start.

This is so awesome, I've always been obsessed with maps, I spent endless hours looking at the LOTR maps back in the day, and I've always wanted to make some maps of my own for my novel/short stories.....so perhaps I shall ^^

Hello,

nice work. Can i ask, what fonts do you use?

jocarra In reply to Scubamarco [2009-03-04 02:52:13 +0000 UTC]

See the description - they're all hand-made from scratch, with the exception of the large "Greater Juubai/Niyotael/etc." font.

Hah-Ya-Ya!!!! That is in-smeggin-credible!

So are you gonna try your hand at the other two at some point? I've always been marvelously curious as to what the new and ancient worlds look like.

Have you left your old Tripartitus symbol behind? The Triquetra in the corner doesn't have the same pop that your symbol does.

jocarra In reply to AnanziP1 [2009-03-03 08:47:42 +0000 UTC]

No, I haven't. Just this one worked better as an inky-lineart type thing, for some reason.

Yeah, I want to try my hand at the other ones, but not until I've thoroughly forgotten how painful this was to do :V

Aside from "WOW" I can't think of anything to say. Phenomenal work.

I agree with the previous poster who referred to the detailed maps associated with "Lord of the Rings." This also makes me think of the printed Cyrodiil map from "Oblivion."

jocarra In reply to Badgz0r [2009-03-01 23:12:20 +0000 UTC]

*chuckles* In fact...

My boyfriend has a beautiful gold-foil Lord of the Rings map on the wall, AS WELL AS both the Oblivion and Shivering Isles maps. Also some old world maps, too, and the World of Warcraft maps...

So they were all kind of an inspiration.

Holy shizz. Freaking amazing barely scratches the surface. It's amazing how detailed and real this looks....Actually, I've been experimenting with styles and such trying to make a map in this style for a friend of mine for his rpg but I can't seem to get the texture that you have going for your background, and I can't find any acceptable tutorials for such things. So I was wondering, if you're willing, to maybe give me some tips or even how you did it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to GlassDrakaina [2009-03-01 23:19:25 +0000 UTC]

I started with a stock picture of a plain piece of old paper. Then a bunch of textures and brushes were used on top of it, and some filters... Film grain, I think.

GlassDrakaina In reply to jocarra [2009-03-02 21:41:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so stock was involved. That helps out so very much. Thanks for giving me some tips. It explains why I fail. I was trying to make it from scratch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to GlassDrakaina [2009-03-03 00:51:53 +0000 UTC]

It's not too hard to make it from scratch.

Something like [link] looks good. Mine wasn't nearly as textured or "interesting" - a lot of that was added through brushing and stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlassDrakaina In reply to jocarra [2009-03-03 22:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so that's all brush work? What would you use then as a base for something like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to GlassDrakaina [2009-03-04 03:05:39 +0000 UTC]

I used a stock photo/scan of an old, yellowy piece of paper
