Nice! There's depth in the concept of map making here for a beginner like me to get direction. It's easy to read and the examples are clear. Great presentation. Now one of my favs.

Great work!

Great, I'm very glad to hear it. Thanks a lot, and good luck to you! If it helps, it's not really about artistic skill or designer/Photoshop know-how. It's really just a lot of patience and fiddling around with settings. Emphasis on the patience XD

Hmm. When I designed the map of my character's fantasy world a long time ago, I didn't want the layout to look too much like I created it, so I made an evolving map instead where the landmasses all drifted into their positions from prehistory.
The map looked pretty crappy compared to this, and the continents didn't change shape enough, but I liked it.
I put it on YouTube if someone wants to see it . Hope it's cool enough it doesn't count as shameless promotion

Heh, that's a neat idea I was considering doing something a bit like this for my own world, as it spans a number of millenia :b I think I just got too lazy, though - doing each frame at a quality like this would kill me, I think XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to jocarra [2012-03-06 01:10:30 +0000 UTC]

You don't do each frame at a quality like that! The "modern" people won't be living there to populate the map anyway until the very end! Plus, in the grand scheme of things, does it even matter that a little squiggle of land jutted out one mile in a particular spot, or that the forest extended two more miles out that way? Nope. In the grander dance of the continents, you just draw the outlines moving and then work out the details for the "present day" map. That's the only map where all the little details matter.

It won't be telling you that after you try to get through more than six frames of animation!

It's not incredible hard to do though if you just draw simply. Then you end up with a really cool map that didn't leap straight from your head to the paper, that developed itself sort of, based on you.

Your coloring style for this looks exactly how my bf did a roll out map. I think it was on a vinyl mat or something. Only he used sharpies smudged with his fingers to get the blended effect. Looks really cool. Grats on the DD!
