Making a map is something I'm not sure I've ever even thought about, but after reading this tutorial, I'm itching to give it a try. Maybe when I finish some of my other projects... Either way, I can't let this not be in my favorites any longer.

Heh, awesome! It's always great to hear that I've inspired someone to try something new. But yeah, by all means, finish your own stuff first. Maps take more time than they appear, in my experience x_x

That doesn't surprise me. Of course, it seems to me like everything takes longer than I expect. But thanks for the encouragement. And the tutorial, of course.

I will definitely be using this very helpful tutorial. Could you, by any chance, tell me some of the fonts you used in this tutorial? (Aside from your own calligraphy, which is beautiful, by the way).

Heh, found this comment finally! The only fonts I used were Arlekino (for the Oakvale map and tutorial headings) and Castellar (found on all the maps, used for region names), everything else was hand written

Thanks. I think I've decided to just go with fonts instead of handwriting for my own map. There are plenty of nice, professional-looking fonts out there for free, and my digital handwriting just isn't that great. (Though I probably won't go with Arlekino - it's a great font, but you're already using it )

Yeah, and trust me, doing it all by hand is a TON of work. I'm really OCD, and fussing over each letter and its individual placement is a pain in the butt X_X I actually tried to look into how to make my own fonts into an actual font file, but it looked like a ton of OCD fussing, too X_X XD I'll get around to it someday, hopefully :b
I'm only using the Arlekino font 'cause it's the font used on the Oakvale website, wanted it to kind of match It also saved me time x_x For my own maps, I'd rather really use my own fonts if possible.

I do calligraphy, but I really haven't mastered it on the tablet yet, and I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist over stuff like that, too.
I have a free fontmaking program called FontForge, but it's got a pretty big learning curve. I might use it to make some of my map fonts, but I'm not sure; I haven't got the finesse of fontmaking yet, so my fonts don't tend to be all that presentable.

I don't do calligraphy, really - I just look at calligraphy examples and try to emulate as best I can.
I've heard about FontForge - I looked into it, but I think it doesn't get along well with Windows, and I just couldn't be bothered with it. Besides, I have FontLab, which is supposed to be a very professional program. But yes, big learning curve x_x - I've watched tutorials on how to use it properly, versus tutorials that show you how to make a font in 5 minutes, but I can't see myself not nitpicking the crap out of it x_x It took me something like an hour to make just one letter I ended up giving up, but I may take another look at eventually.
Until then, I just use Illustrator to keep my fonts in vector form, then pull from my alphabets to make words and stuff, lining the letters up manually, then copying it into Photoshop as a smart image (so it stays vector and can be resized).

Well, FontForge is a Linux program, so it can be a bit funny on Windows, but it generally does okay if you just stick to basics. I use it because it's free, and I can't really afford to spend the money on Fontlab (though I sure wish I could ). FontForge works well enough for me - I sort of get around the learning curve by creating the letters in Illustrator, then just importing the vectors into FontForge. After that, it's usually just a case of tweaking.
That said, FontForge doesn't seem to render the fonts as well for some reason. It could be a setting of some kind that I'm not aware of; or it could just be that I'm getting what I pay for.

I have absolutely no need to make a map. I have no desire to make a map. I don't even own photoshop. I tried using it once and couldn't figure out ANYTHING.
Yet I just read that entire thing. xD Seems like it'd be helpful to anyone other than me (:
(idk why I felt the need to comment but..yea..idk...hi)

It's really not as hard as it looks! I could have been clearer for people who've never used Photoshop, but it doesn't require a lot of artistic skill OR Photoshop wizardry, really!
