Ahhhh I love the art of making old maps...so beautiful. I'll use this as aid when I make myself some traditionally (I love dying paper and drawing them with ink and nib <3) This is lovely!

Haha, love your avatar, by the way.
I wish I had the patience and the room to make big oldschool maps the traditional way! How do you dye your papers, by the way? Coffee/tea, as some people have suggested?

Thank you, it is pretty delightful to watch that kitty go, haha.
I usually make a mix of coffee grounds and black tea for the base tones and then add darker flecks with things like cocoa powder (while the paper is still damp), soy sauce, and fruit juices (if I drank alcohol I'd probably use wine instead).
I've been dying paper the past few days (I used to do it all the time in high school) and because I don't have much room I've been folding up my paper and putting it in a bucket with a rock on top, haha. I do this a few times with each sheet, letting them dry in between and folding them up a bit differently each time. Gives them a nice worn look^^

Yeah, I usually prefer to drink my coffee, tea, and cocoa! I was doing an art project once, and rubbed the paper (it was pretty heavyweight) down with wet tea grounds because I didn't know what I was doing. It worked okay, was pretty thin but stained the paper enough for what I needed. How do you keep the paper from getting all crinkly and distorted? The paper I was staining was like 4 feet big x_x

I prefer drinking my tea and cocoa too! Not so much coffee, I try and stay away from caffeine XD You can use used tea leaves and coffee grounds too though. If you make a pot of coffee you can just use the wet grounds when you're done since flavor doesn't matter XD
I don't usually try and keep my paper too flat, I like when it gets crinkly and tears a bit around the edges and creases. When I have tried to keep it flat though I usually get something big and water resistant (like a plastic bin or, in the case of really big paper multiple ones) that I can put on top of it while it dries. I've heard some people iron their paper back to flat too but I don't know how well it works as I've never tried it.
Also, that's some big paper! I've been dying 18X24 inch recently.

Yeah, that's a good point. I suppose I can make the tea or coffee first, then use the crappy grounds after I'm done with them.
Wow, iron their paper? I can see that going badly if you're not careful!

Oh, just tried something new and thought you might like to know...Soy sauce gives some really gorgeous darker tones! I splashed a bit on the edges of some paper I've been staining, let it sit for maybe 30 seconds and took a paper towel to it to pull up the extra/smooth out the edges a bit. Gave a really nice water stained look! If you ever get Chinese take out you can just use the extra soy sauce packets^^

"If you ever get Chinese take out you can just use the extra soy sauce packets^^"
lol, I tend to, but I also tend to eat them XD Good to know, though! I imagine it'd be good for, as you say, getting some nice dark tones. I imagine it could get rather costly to use up coffee or tea grounds (especially if a person isn't making use of them), and take time to let it steep water or soak in, while soy is ready to go!

You can all go see, by my maps, that this is one of my favorite things to do.

TIP: one of the biggest mistakes made here is detail. If you really want it to look old then you cant put too much color and detail into it. Go look at a bunch of actual old maps and see what they were doing.
COMMENT: Maps are a great thing for begginers because of their very elemental nature; one can break down the work into simple, small bits and peaces.
Ps. Sorry for not making any tutorials yet but anyone feel free to ask me questions directly about this sort of thing.
*Nice Maps Jocarra'

Oh, excellent! Good to hear And yeah, it takes some fiddling to get the colours the way you want. I just keep them all on separate layers so they don't get all messed up, and so you can turn them on and off as you wish, just in case you want to do, say, alternate versions of the same map. One with political geography, and one that's all climate and stuff.
Thanks a lot!
