Description Christmas Gift 6

My gift to an old friend,

Ah, Bleak Divinity. My only regret is that this won’t mean much to most people. There’s probably only two or three people besides the requester who will recognize any of this.

So, allow me to explain. Bleak Divinity is my first work of fiction from nearly ten years ago. It was the story I wrote to break out into writing. Unfortunately, I never finished it and went on to create about… oh, fifty more works of fiction that I would also never finish.

About a year ago, I reread the first 80 or so pages that I’d written. For something written by a fifteen year old, it was pretty impressive storytelling, but it suffered lackluster writing and more than a few plotholes. But I DO have a small cult following that’s been demanding I finish it for the past decade, so I guess it can’t be that bad. And now much older, I can’t help but see how much I’ve evolved as a storyteller.

And since rereading it last year, I’ve been tweaking it a GREAT DEAL to where it’s a much different story from what it once was: characters and plotpoints were added, removed, altered, etc.. I think it’s now near perfect. I’m happy with it. Exceedingly happy. In fact, consider this my official announcement: when I complete “Lavender Town” (because I WILL complete it), Bleak Divinity will be my next project. Just take note that this is a VERY different story from Lavender Town.

I’m all for commentary and questions if anyone has any!

This really makes me think back to when I was fifteen, I had a fantasy epic that was reviewed by a few people but couldn't really stand on its own, it died in the end. But a lot of the scenes and characters from that piece actually integrated into other things I found interest in. I guess it really was an evolution. Amazingly it was around 80 pages when I gave up on it. But I guess when you were doing this I had my first poem taken away from me (first year junior high.) The best thing I can say here is don't fight the flow of evolution, if anything its just a way of showing you the truth. If you found a better understanding of how to tell this story, go with it. You know I'm going to follow as close as I can. Hope I can help.

There were a couple others that I'd come up with around the same time as Bleak Divinity here, but none held up quite like this one. Like you though, several of my abandoned projects live on in newer one with familiar characters, scenes and whatnot. They're a little different from what the once were, but the idea is still there.

I guess it is sad that a plan doesn't come together. But as long as an idea is never forgotten, I guess that is whats most important.

Wow, its about time. but its going to be like reading a whole new story most likely. I still remember the list of changes you made. (sorry for not responding about that by the way) and i can tell that its going to be a new experience. there are some new things that you added that i had questions and concerns about but that was months ago and its probably far to late to even bring them up now. even the cast is slightly different. and i believe theres a species or two missing or changed if those are the characters i think they are.

anywho cool beans cant wait to read this revamp of yours.

sincerely

and old fan

Oh, yes. Bleak Divinity is a very different beast from what it used to be. I believe all the changes are for the better though, and I hope you and all of its other fans will agree.

I have a rather detailed synopsis of the story's new direction lying around somewhere. If you like, I'll send it to you sometime.

That's probably the most characters I've seen in a single piece of yours. Quite an achievement, if I do say so myself.

...I should probably finish reading Bleak... but I'm hooked on Lavendertown. CURSE YOU (not really).

Most characters, huh? The scary thing is that I realized shortly after finishing it (and having no more room) that there are AT LEAST another three characters that deserve to be there. Bleak kinda has epic-sized cast.

I admit, I don't think the old version of it holds a candle to Lavender Town now. But please, feel free to read the old version. I'm always interested in hearing thoughts and opinions on any of my work even if it's already been revamped. And be assured, the new and improved version is something everyone can look forward to.

Until then, you'll just have to settle for Lavender Town (I'm sure you're not distraught to hear this).

I certainly hope it's not the end of the world... that'd suck.

Thank you for commenting. Glad you like the piece.

You and actually like ten other people (random other people I've shown Bleak to over the years... most of which I'm no longer in contact with, mind you) are my cult.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Request for you? Is "write more" an acceptable answer?
