In Japan, Valentine's Day tradition (among many middle/high school students) is for girls to give chocolates/cookies/candies to their crush. In this heteronormative world we live in, that young girl's crush is usually probably going to be assumed to be a boy. But in Chiaki's case, we know she's extremely likely to be talking about Fumiko. Based on the way her family are responding, it doesn't seem she's worked up the courage to say that to them, though, making this conversation a bit of a minefield.

This is our first real insight into Chiaki's family life too. Technically, the dream sequence at the end of Chapter 1 featured her mom and brother, but were those things they'd actually say, or just projections of her own anxiety?

And do we have any clearer of a picture now? There's a lot to glean from all this. I figure depending on your own personal experiences and how you might be interpreting what they say, I could see a lot of readers taking some very different stances on every member of Chiaki's family here. I am trying to create a degree of nuance with her family rather than some of the more black and white situations seen in Rain . So whether you think her folks seem like fine people, or you're seeing red flags, I think all opinions are totally valid. And I'd love to hear what your opinions are!
