Description
One of her, anyway. Based on the classic cover for Adventure Comics #340, by Curt Swan. It features, as does the story, one of Superboy's greatest failures. It's a good thing they wiped his memory when he returned to the past, because that kinda thing could mess aguy up. You swoop in, all heroic, and the computer kills the girl you're meant to save, while you wrestle with it's tentacle...and not even the one holding her!I wanted to do a version of this cover, for the Imperial Guard, but it took some deep dives down the memory hole to come up with a good substitute for Computo, rooted in the Marvel Universe, and who/which could have been around in the early days of Marvel and the Imperial Guard. I was stumped...then I remembered Warlock. No, not the good Warlock, the golden-skinned angsty Warlock, the techno-organic "Technarch" Warlock from New Mutants. But, for this purpose, his race is perfect. Computo would have totally done this, if he'd been all nano-techy and such, but it's hard to self-replicate when you got tubes to replace!
So, here we have a world in the Shi-ar empire, under attack by one of the Technarchy. Triplex, a girl who can triplicate herself due to a mutation, has been seized by the Technarch menace, as has Tempest. Like a smart robot, the Technarch is totally charging up from Tempest (keep them watts coming, Dura-Cell Lad!) and zapping Triplex. On the original cover, Triplicate Girl is crumbling, disintegrating, or something, but that's just so they could play nice and not have to show a dead girl in the comic. Triplex's colors are based on Triplicate Girl's. In my head, she's one of Gladiator's race, and they were an item. Ever wonder why Gladiator is always so grim and dour? Because watching a girl die when you could have saved her will MESS A GUY UP! Ripping arms off self-replicating intelligent machines may be fun and look muy mas macho, but it ain't getting the job done!
Also, the Technarch invader seems to have encountered a piece of Earth-tech, out there, that's it's adapted into a kind of plasma projector. Precursor to the Farscape project...
If I was writing this as a story, Gladiator would spend the next year with his head shaved, as a sign of penance. His grandstanding got his friend killed, one of her, anyway, and that has consequences.
I'm hoping to do more of these, so, if you have any ideas, shoot them over and I'll see what I can come up with. It's tricky, because I want to do them using elements of the Marvel Universe, that could potentially cross over to the Imperial Guard equivalent to the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Thanos subbing for Darkseid in the Great Darkness Saga is too easy, though.

But Thanos subbing for Darkseid would make it the Greater Darkness Saga, since Thanos seems to pull less punches than Darkseid at times.
How about using Kang, Rama-Tut or Scarlet Centurion as a stand in for the Time Trapper?
And Terrax should be in the Marvel equivalent of the Fatal Five, along with a variation of Emerald Empress who has a giant Gem like Dr. Spectrum uses.
And maybe have the Guard doing something with either The Stranger or High Evolutionary in place of some DC villain

Thanos does seem more badass than Darkseid. Being Big Daddy sadist on a world of masochists isn't really very extreme. But, what I meant about Thanos and Darkseid is, the substitution is just too obvious.
Terrax could work, but he appeared so late that it doesn't fit the "early Legion" theme. somebody on Facebook suggested the Masters of Evil as a sub for the Fatal Five. I thought it might work, if you added someone like the Stranger, or Kang or Immortus, to get them there. Sadly, the covers on those first Fatal Five stories are just not iconic, in the least.
I did have an idea for the plot of the story they'd appear in, involving some kind of solar bomb and my Metallyx character sacrificing himself to save the star system. In the last panel, it would be revealed that the system they just saved is the one Phoenix destroys, years later.

Terrax appeared 2 years after the Imperial Guard did (they appeared in 77, and Terrax 79). Considering The Fatal Five appear 9 years after the debut of the Legion, seems to me Terrax would fit in the time frame. But I get that you're trying to replicate certain covers, and ones with the FF aren't really the best (though I always liked the one with superboy struggling to keep Persuader's Axe from killing him, while the FF stand off in the background)

Yeah, I like that one, too.
I saw a Dave Cockrum cover recreation of the issue where Tyr's gun has taken over Superboy, he even inked it go mimic the Nick Caddy look of the original. Always liked Tyr as a villain, but he was kind of a one trick pony. Dave really liked Mohawks, didn't he?

Yeah, he does seem to have a thing for Mohawks.
