Description This is a new t-shirt I designed for the Mongoose Karate dojo , the same folks that originally commissioned the Cobra and Mongoose picture for the same reason. For this version, they specifically requested an anthro mongoose. I had to watch a lot of footage to find this good-looking kata! On the actual shirt, the lettering to the right (which says goju ryu) will be much bigger.

I learned a bit about goju ryu, which is native to Okinawa where mongooses are common (and where one of my friends grew up). It's an incredibly practical and brutally physical martial art practiced by people who were regularly invaded and disarmed; so there's a lot of emphasis on unarmed physical toughness, and training involves mostly common "non-weapon" items, like heavy water jugs. One form uses an oar as its specialty weapon, which for folks on an island seemed very pragmatic to me.

I think this shirt goes into production this week. It's been a while since I turned it in.

Nice! This popped up when I was searching for Goju logos as we're designing a new patch for our dojo. Do you remember which kata this stance came from?

You're probably done with your patch, but the truth is no. I watched a lot of videos and made a lot of sketches, and I was looking for what looked cool instead of what kata it was from. Pfft artists, am I right?

My wife and I studied Goju-Ryu (literally "hard-soft") karate for many years. My wife missed her black belt certification only because she twisted her ankle before her final meet (ironically, hurting herself in a Judo class she was taking concurrently).

We haven't maintained our studies because Goju-Ryu dojos are hard to find in our current location (most offer Shotokan karate).

Excellent defensive stance on the mongoose, BTW.

Goju is NOT "hard-soft".

Goju is "hard-gentle". "Judo" doesn't translate as "soft way".

Steadfast yet yielding are we. Nowhere near "soft".

I appreciate your familiarity with the original Japanese definitions. However (for the sake of discussion) I have to reiterate that "soft" and "gentle" are synonyms (in English), when used to describe activity (a "soft touch" and a "gentle touch" are the same). I can say this with confidence, my first University degree program was English language.

I have not studied any karate for many years now (I haven't had the time or opportunity), but I plan to enroll my son as soon as he is old enough to qualify for instruction.

In the activity you're attempting to describe, the words "gentle" &
"soft" may be synonymous according to websters (also trained, temperate, disciplined), but intention within the semantics are different.
"Soft" may be the best way someone may interpret what is going on, but if you watch, learn, & think about Goju ryu, you will understand that "soft" isn't just inaccurate, it misrepresents the concept.

Chinen & Higaonna are the best. Nothing "soft" in the biomechanics, kinetic power, or SELF-DEFENSE INTENTION.

...maybe "yielding", "steadfast", or "suppressing".
"SOFT"??? Like ice cream?? LOL.
