Description
Well, after a year of sitting on the drafting table, I'm finally forcing myself to do my 8-page short story revolving around everyone's favorite little Jedi, Yoda. The old "Promo Page" for Yoda: Rules of Engagement can be found here. [link]

You do have a good way presenting this. it looks good. But you should consider some details here and there. First of all, how did the normal droids ended up in front of yoda, if the superdroids just cut through and no other normal droid is seen? Furthermore yodas hairstyle seems more like it could be worn by mozart than being actually yodas (page3). Copypasting the droid/droid starfighters would be acceptle, if it would'n be always the sameone(reffering to 3 page). At this page, first panel it also seems not needed and only making the starfighters look like being stamps put in every free space. At the end I'd like to say, thanks for sharing and hopefully you can make use of this critic in anyway

Thanks for the feedback. I think the criticisms are fair, but I have a few counter points.
You mentioned that panel 1 was unnecessary. It's actually a pretty necessary establishing shot for the battle, and I stand by it being there. If I started with panel 2, there would be no context to where we are or the scale of the battle going on, which Yoda will soon be heading into on Page 3. The reveal of it isn't meant to be on Page 3 (which is where it would be if Panel 1 of Page 1 didn't exist), I wanted that established immediately.
What would be unnecessary, though, is showing what happened to the normal droids you were talking about. It simply suggests that the Super Battle Droids that are cutting through aren't the first droids onto the ship. Since panel 1 established that they're in the middle of a battle, cutting to the hall filled with destroyed droids already visually tells the reader that the battle had already been taken to the Republic Cruiser's interior as well. I think showing the regular droids would be unnecessary. The story is following Yoda's exit from the ship to the Droid Cruiser (Pages 4 - 6 aren't linked in the description but they're in my gallery), point A to Point B.
Yoda's hair was a stylistic choice. I knew what I wanted, and I wanted the old timey hair style for him. I dig it for this comic.
I agree with you on the copying and pasting, but frankly, I only had about a day per page to complete them. Paid work has to come first and these were just for fun. So because of time constraints, I didn't think much about copying and pasting. But that's definitely a fair criticism!

Ah k,
I did not (wanted to) say panel1 being unnecessary. Actually I totally see that its necessary. I simply didn't used correct english i think. I only dont like the way the droidfigthers look like in the first panel. like stamps, chaotic but static and most importantly... not actually flying/attacking. regrouping them in pairs or something like that or using less of them might help.
I'm ok with the copy thing. just looked a bit weird.
thank's for the reply

Thank you! No, I'm posting them as I finish them. Unfortunately, other projects have come up, but I promise to finish all 8. I love the thumbnails so much and the rest of the pages are going to be a LOT of fun.

I await the end eagerly, then! And good luck getting around to it, I know you must be really busy with other things. Needless to say, I'm impressed. This work, though it is short, should be SW official. It really should.

Thanks so much for all the kind words! I'll do my best not to let you down.
And I'm meeting with Lucasfilm in 2 weeks for a portfolio review, and while they aren't the comic dudes that Dark Horse Comics are, it could still mean good things for me doing Star Wars art!

That is so awesome!! You could become famous. And to be able to put your fingerprints in the Star Wars world...officially...wow. That's every fans dream. You must be very proud. You'll have to do a journal or something about it. Keep me posted, please. I wanna know where this goes, because it's going somewhere really fast.

Thanks once again! TheForce.net and Rebelscum.com have already got me doing quite a bit of Star Wars work for their Celebration V stations, which is fantastic, and through them, I've been able to increase my fanbase a little. Always a huge plus! But yeah, the grand daddy of all dreams is within reach! I'm looking forward to hearing the criticism Troy Alders has for my work. I think it'll be really helpful for my growth as an artist!
I actually don't update my DA journal very often, only because I'm trying to divert attention to the blog I've created specifically for cataloging my journey to becoming a Star Wars artist. You can check that out here:

And I update every Friday! So there's another update to come just tomorrow. As well as a special update this Sunday. And once I meet with Lucasfilm, you can be SURE to expect an update on that meeting. Thanks again for your interest!

Yeah, I like a lot of Turin's art, especially the story and concept of the character of the same name. Yeah. He's got some sweet stuff. Funny that you two went to the same art class, it really is.

Yay comics!
I was going to ask you this. I thought of it a while ago. I was considering digital inking for comics and was curious about this.
Do you ink digitally entirely? I cant recall. But if you do, and say you want to in the future reproduce this in some way, what do you do with the file? I'd be worried of a computer crash or something of that nature. Do you just save the files on a giant external hard drive?

JoeHoganArt In reply to ladyz0e [2010-02-20 05:39:09 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Natalie!
Back in SVA I never did, but nowadays, with my trusty Cintiq 12wx tablet monitor, yep, I do all of my inking digitally. It's funny you ask too, because I JUST THIS WEEK lost everything on my computer and had to completely reinstall Windows and every program I own...BUT, because I back EVERYTHING up on TWO extra hard drives, I didn't actually lose very much at all! Just a couple of hours of my time.
I keep all of my PSDs (Photoshop documents), even the super old ones, in a folder on my Western Digital 500 gig Passport. These are the portable external hard drives that are bigger than the tiny USB flash drives, and they don't require an external power cable, just a USB cable that comes standard with them. This way, I have my art on me at all times as they're really easy to carry around. I also save EVERY FILE TO MY NAME on my Western Digital 1.5 Terabyte (that's 1,500 gigs!) hard drive. This way, if either hard drive crashes or is damaged, my art is still intact until I can buy a replacement. In total, the two hard drives cost about $300 total if you shop smart, but it's well worth the investment if you're going to be serious about inking and coloring digitally.
It's also important to mention that any art I work on, is always directly on my computer's hard drive first. This slows down the time it takes to save, and cuts on a lot of the lag you may experience the bigger the file gets. I save every 10 - 15 minutes in case of crashing (which is rare), and once I break for the day/night, that's when I back it up on the two hard drives.
I hope any of that was helpful!

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing
I figure you *have* to have something like a huge-as-hell External hard drive when you get serious with digital coloring

ladyz0e In reply to JoeHoganArt [2010-02-21 02:57:01 +0000 UTC]
I've already been experimenting with digital inking in some of the newer drawings I did. My line art comes out looking digital anyways since I edit it so heavily in photoshop, so why not just do it in illustrator and save myself the hassle? ohoho.
I just worry that the lines will look flatter than when I do the inking in real life. But I think thats just a matter of practicing more and tinkering with my brushes.

JoeHoganArt In reply to ladyz0e [2010-02-21 18:04:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I noticed the recent ones having digital inks (which look really great, btw. I really like the "Crazy Retardation" one's ink and colors especially!), but yeah, there's a few tricks you'll probably pick up once you make some textured custom brushes!
I think using illustrator makes the linework a little TOO digital if you're going for an "inspired-by-traditional" look since illustrator is all about perfect vectors. I like the messiness of Photoshop's brushes as it leaves in the artist's imperfections a bit. But that's a personal preference! There's definitely advantages and disadvantages to both inking with Photoshop vs. Illustrator.
I look forward to seeing more of your digital stuff!

Wow! That last panel--soooo Yoda! This is awesome, and I would bet you could get into really working on Star Wars comics for sure! The first panels are so filled with exciting visuals and different depths. One problem--a missing "there" in the third text square!

JoeHoganArt In reply to Nemonus [2010-02-19 02:11:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much!
Do you really think it needs the "there"? It makes sense to me without it. Like, their orders are to go fetch Yoda. That's what "they are to do."
Hmm, if you think it needs clarifying, I'll take care of it when I do a revision sweep at the end of the 8 pages before submitting to Dark Horse!

Nemonus In reply to JoeHoganArt [2010-02-19 02:19:30 +0000 UTC]
You have a point about the "they are", but it was confusing at first--I suggest either a "there" or to put "they are" instead of the contraction. Then it'll come across a lot better that that's the order the droids are carrying out. But think about it, get another opinion.
