Description I started the piece by applying watercolor washes to a piece of cold press illustration board, the nice thick stuff. Then, started adding detail with a Koh-i-noor Rapidograph pen. Came back with some colored pencil, and some more pen. The picture was originally 24 X 30 inches, but I did not like some areas, so cropped it to the final size of 15 X 15 inches. This may sound crazy, but it was not really unusual for me, as I have done this same thing many times. Sometimes, the entire image just does not work for me, but there may be something salvageable. Anyway, in this case, I thought it was appropriate that I cut away a large portion of a drawing called Cancer. To me, this was similar to the way in which we often try to treat cancer, continuously cutting it away, but often not getting it all. Maybe this was a dark topic, I don't know. Many people tell me that my art is dark, but I don't usually feel that way about it. However, this one is not really happy and is about the insidious growth of cancer both physically in our bodies and metaphorically in our society.

Update: I entered this piece in the Cotton District Arts Festival Juried Competition held on April 20, 2013 in Starkville, MS. It was accepted and won Best of Show!

thanks, I find myself wanting to crop things more and more. I guess I am often only satisfied with parts of things rather than the whole.

oh, maybe then it's nice for you to take a look at my works... i take photos of little parts of things, sometimes "boring" everyday things and work on them thus turning them into something special and pleasant to the eye...

Thanks! would you be interested in doing something with some color in it? I need to send you something, and I am kind of in that mode right now.

SanderJansen In reply to JoeMacGown [2013-02-12 16:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Well that's ok with me but it can take a long time before I can finish something in color and ink because I don't master it like pencil and have to practice and/or draw it first in pencil. It will be a big challenge but leaving the comfort zone can be a good but scary thing Really like your new colored works! You use watercolors right?

watercolor, acrylic, colored ink, whatever...no hurry, I have get something started first and that will probably take a while itself

No, you are right no all counts. Funny little faces, doing their thing. Life is crazy. Death is crazy. Beauty is a mystery. Its all interchangeable, I guess. So, yeah, you are not an ass. Life is just a strange adventure. Sometimes bad, sometimes good, sometimes its a point of view. Of course, being human, we have our own point of view.

dholms [2013-01-31 02:06:03 +0000 UTC]

dude this is crazy.
and you're saying this is cropped out of a bigger piece???
wow.
the combination of subtle color and wicked detail makes for an awesome dynamic.
making it look metallic.
like something ancient but alien.
then you notice these little funny faces and you're like,...'wtf?'

love it man.

Another beauty! I don't have any dark feelings when viewing your Art Joe. This one is no exception. I don't like the idea of cancer (the real thing, not your Art) but I like this one. You say that this one is not really happy, but I think of them as a nice bunch of....yes what?.....a nice bunch of "growths"? They don't look sad to me. Why did you choose this subject?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeMacGown In reply to Yainderidoo [2013-01-30 21:41:26 +0000 UTC]

True, I don't think the growths in this picture look sad at all, they are doing what they do. No reason in particular for choosing this. Did not decide what I was going to call it until half way through, as it was growing. My father died of cancer a few years back. He was living with me at the time. So, I saw first hand what it does to a person.
