I like the fact that He has a triumphant look despite all that blood and grime.

Beautiful man. Unfair such a perfect being had to suffer for losers like us. But I guess that is the wonder that is God's grace (:

Why did you title it 'Our Finest Hour'?

I like it a lot and beyond what others have said... I don't think I have anything to add. lol <3

Thanks

I named it that because of the juxtaposition of Christ's death and resurrection. On one hand, it was such a sad and brutal event; however, it also freed us all from our sins. To me, it was greatest moment in history.

Hmm... true. And yet somehow it seems like "His Finest Hour" might place the focus on the piece, and the truth behind it, a bit more.

I guess I also called it 'Our' Finest House because of the irony as well... the fact that we, as a human race, crucified the only man who could truly save us. So in a sense, there is also some sarcasm in the title as well. But mainly, I wanted to make a statement about the contrast of crucifying him for our salvation. Regardless, I'm glad the title has made you think

I like how you made him more dark skinned and with brown eyes. Sometimes the white blue-eyed Jesus just plain annoys me, since he was Jewish, not Caucasian.
The only critique that I would have is the colour of the blood. The particular colour of red seems to have a blue cast to it, which makes the colour cooler than it ought to be. Perhaps if you used a warm black to mix with the red to make it slightly darker. Because when you bleed, it isn't unless you're looking at the edges of the source of the blood that it seems a brighter red. The sources is a much deeper darker red. You could possibly try and work on the subtle gradation from dark to light. If you ever need any tips or have any questions, feel free to send me a note!
Other than that, I can't make any critiques on the anatomy. As far as his right eye is concerned, I don't know if you just chose to make it out of proportion to make it look swollen (as it indeed does). But the thing that really arrests me about this painting and makes me look back again and again is the humanity caught in his eye. The shading in the white of his eye is simply exquisite, and the well placed white dab just brings it completely to life.
Amazing job!

Thanks for the comments and the critique... I really appreciate the time you put into the comments
I completely agree with you about the way Jesus has been portrayed as blue-eyed and blond haired... that was actually a huge motivation for me in doing this piece.
Thanks again for the comments.

No problem at all. I actually miss formal critiques. I haven't had any since 2D design at the beginning of sophomore year (a year ago). In fact, if it's not inconvenient for you and you don't mind popping by my gallery, feel free to critique my stuff. Haha. I kind of need more people telling me something sucks and that I should fix it.
And this painting actually reminds me of a painting in my parents' bedroom that depicts a very dark haired tanned Jesus.
Lol. It's one of those paintings you can't look at for too long because of the way he stares at you, as if he knows everything that's going on in your mind.

Thanks for the comments It's taken me a while to fine my style... but I love the way that I can really be expressive with it and not have to worry too much about a lot of detail... I just add detail where it's important.
