Earthrealm was saved, and Scorpion returned to hell, however Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm causes a breach of the fabrics of the afterlife and so the souls of the dead are scattered about. Scorpion returns to Earthrealm and finds it in ruins, something resembling what could be found in Hell. Scorpion vows to stop this invasion once and for all, by killing Shao Kahn.
