Description
Madlib Circa early 2000's. Waiting patiently for some new projects of his.I decided to say fuck it and pushed my work aside for a couple of hours to rock this. Not all that refined, but I still digs. I usually get a kick of motivation after I bitch and moan about it for a little bit. I'll be swamped now, but I am anyway so what's the difference?
I've sort of found my niche (I think) when it comes to the tablet... I use it more as a supplemental tool, as opposed to doing all the coloring with it. I just like hard lines and I can't get the exact definition I want with the tablet. Not to mention I have such an unsteady hand, that getting good transitional tones is always tough for me. So I use it as a post-work tool, upping the tonal values with blending brushes and stuff like that.

I love Mad Lib, very few producers have the respect I have for this guy, with perhaps exception to Danger Mouse and a couple others. But Mad Lib works so hard at his craft. A great image, and hard to believe it's vector, I love your textures man!

Thanks man. Madlib's music has been a huge source of inspiration for me for years now (I rocked the 1st Lootpack joint OVER AND OVER when that shit came out).
I strive to have my art look the way his beats sound, if that makes any sense at all. That's my goal.

Makes sense to me, I am always jamming his stuff, mostly the work he did with J Dilla, the album Jay Lib, love it.

Lootpack era?
His new album with Guilty Simpson is gonna be heavy. So is his new album with Strong Arm Steady... Madlib doesn't stop. His body of work is infinite.

i think the tablet is the right tool for that kind of work, it would be hell without it!!
what amazes me the most in your work is the way you do the strokes!

This is pretty sweet man! If you don't mind sharing, how exactly do you color? I'm especially curious as to how you get the texture in the color!

I use the pen tool in Illustrator (and sometimes Photoshop) to draw all the shapes, starting with the basic outline... Then I set up the base color and draw overlapping shapes and I set them to multiply for shading, and screen for highlights. With this one, I then brought it into photoshop, and set the whole piece to multiply over a paper texture layer to allow it to show through. I used a tablet to add just a few touches of blending with a few different soft brushes.

Nice work, man! It's interesting, I was looking at recent photos of him and he doesn't look much like the image I have in my head. Wearing shades, short hair, sharp clothes... He's cool either way, though.

Yeah I saw some recent shots. It makes him look much older in my opinion. But artists all do drastic things like that I guess. I remember him more like the lootpack days personally, which is why I wanted to do this one.

You really get in there on the dark shadows and line art... I think I spend too much time on my hard values and never go in to blend... Maybe I should.
I think I've only taken my tablet out the box twice in since I got it 2 years ago... I'm hella ineffective with it.
Awesome work.

Yeah, I mean I don't get too involved in the blending, just because I like the harshness... But here and there I mess with it a little.

Turned out great! So what if your tablet use is unconventional as long as you can produce good art, eh?
