Just in case you guys don't check my scraps, here's the description for Zou...This dude is somewhat inspired from some kids I worked with a couple of years ago, and by kids I've grown up with. This dude is half Cambodian, half Chinese. I'm deciding to make him the soft-spoken, cool-headed one (as opposed to Torch); it will be a stark contrast to his near-psychotic penchant for violence with his twin machetes. He's probably got more of a body count on his blades than the Thstl does on his wrench or icepick.

It depends on what I'm going for... I have a ton of pictures I snapped and usually use those. But every now and then, like this one for instance, I didn't really have on hand... I should be getting a decent camera soon, and I plan on going out and getting my own shit for everything, you know?

I just got my own SLR so now I don't have to use stock photos which is better I think because now you will not see that background photos on someone else's work.

Yeeeaaaahhh, I'm feeling this piece.
When I look at it, I imagine he's hiding a weapon behind his back.
But, no normal weapon; like when Master Killer invented the three-section chain-linked staff or like the flying guillotine from the Shaw Bros movies.
Come up with something crazy and unique.

I was sorta just going for the old Chinese wiseman who walks with his hands behind his back, you know? But if it is some sort of surprise, it would most likely be a projectile of some sort.

how did you do the background? the character's style blends so well with the background.

I found an image of Chinatown, I used threshold in photoshop to make it stark black and white, deleted the white, and converted the black to a different color (like a burnt ochre), set it to multiply over an orange background color, then I laid a texture into it, and colored the red and yellow areas in with a brush to give it more depth, as opposed to some of my more static backgrounds. I don't know if that made any sense whatsoever... As things in my head don't usually translate to typing all that well.
