Description If you're an immortal, forced to live on forever throughout eternity, how can you not help but feel alone and by yourself as friends come and go in the world?

Inspired by the song "First Night Alone" By ThatSonofaMitch and All Levels at Once - [link]

This was a bit of an experimental image for me - I wanted to try drawing an outline-less vector. Although drawing the flat colors was quick and easy, I found that shading was much trickier. I'll probably try at least a few more images in this style though. It was fun.

Edit 06-19-12: Strengthened the shading a bit, to make it more noticeable.

I really found this picture interesting. At first I just gave it a glance but didn't like it because of it's plain appearance, but then I took a closer look and found that it was actually really well made. All of that could have been avoided with a bit heavier shading, making it more noticeable. Anyway, I really see what you tried to portrait here and I think you did a rather good job at doing so too.

The ground could have been done a bit differently though, something about a bunch of really smooth perfectly green hills doesn't really look all that well to me, although You did a good job with the Sky. That wind (or clouds, not entirely sure, but it doesn't matter) really helped giving it the right feeling I think.

I realized that this was based off First Night Alone the second I saw this btw. Great job!

Thanks for the feedback

The shading was a bit of an experiment for me. I tried drawing this image without borders, which really complicated my shading techniques as the image was much flatter, layer wise, than I'm used to. Though I do see what you mean about the lack of emphasis on it, so I'm definitely going to work on my shading techniques for future images in this style.

In the meantime, as you and a few others mentioned it, I did drop the transparency on the shadows a little bit, so they'd stand out more. Though in my next picture, I think I'm going to try meshes instead, as those give smoother, more realistic effects.

Thanks again, your advice is much appreciated

It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Also, I'm glad you appreciated it. Lately I decided that I should start commenting "meaningless" comments on things I like since I know how happy it makes me to see that someone likes my art and since I know that no one really cares all that much about favourites unfortunately. Luckily, you had requested critique, so I didn't need to write some generic compliment.

Since you requested a critique, I shall have little mercy starting with the background! MLP night scenes usually have a less even distribution of stars as seen here. (It's a pretty blurry background but it also features some clouds)

As for Colgate herself, she is a bit off-model, I suggest using some more references when making your vectors. I didn't even notice she was shaded until I read the description - the shading is pretty thin and actually looks a bit like outlines. The colour is a bit odd as well, it just doesn't make me think that's a shadow. Finally, since it's a night shot, you should use a darker colour palette for Colgate. Again, I suggest a reference.

Soo..that's what I can see at the moment, I probably forgot some things, but this should give you something to work with.

Hehehe, little mercy? I can definitely take a punch. Plus the only way I can improve is with helpful, thorough feedback such as this

Thanks for the reference shot - I didn't know there were any night shots of Colgate (though, admittedly, I only searched the S1 images), so I only had a day shot which I tried to darken a bit. I'll go through later tonight and alter her colors.

Since several people mentioned the barely-noticeable shadows, I went back and darkened them a little bit to hopefully make them stand out more. I honestly was trying to do a gradient mesh instead, but couldn't get that to turn out right as this was a new style for me. I'm definitely planning on trying more advanced shading in my future images in this style.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what do you think about the colors for the hills? I honestly couldn't tell if they were too light or not. Tried making them darker, and they just blended together, made them lighter, and they appeared too bright, so I tried to find a good medium.

And thank you so much for the helpful feedback, I appreciate it very much

Oh, the hills, well - I'm not completely sure, but what strikes me as odd about them is their green colour. VERY GREEN and out of place of the night shot. Reflected light would make them more like a dark cyan sort of thing. If you wanna read more about this sort of stuff and some basic colour theory, I find this a very good place to start. It even has a section with grass!
