You can know if they're butterflies or moths by the position that the wings are: if they stay closed thus are moths, but if they stay with their wings closed and raised, is because they are butterflies. Moths are nocturnal creatures(often they hide and sleep in the day and hunt for food at night), while the butterflies are diurnal (active by day).
