Obviously, they must have successfully defended all of ponykind from an invasion by the forces of darkness. MLP has its fair share of villains, you know.

That didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I believe Lauren Faust has hinted that Luna became Nightmare Moon only partly because of her jealousy and bitterness, and there was also some outside force that corrupted her. I like to think that it's some sort of unknown villain with great powers, like Discord, but of course it can't be Discord, since he was already stoned when Luna became Nightmare Moon.
