Description
Seamus walks up to where Felicity is sitting and looking rather dejected and miserable. "Hey, Princess!" he greets her. "What's up?"Felicity looks up at her dad, squinting into the bright sunlight.
Before she can reply, Seamus speaks again. "Oh, right... your friend . What happened?" he sits down on the sand beside his daughter and looks directly at her.
"Oh, Dad! I've really let her down!" Felicity cries. "She decided to go home . I tried to stop her but she wouldn't listen."
"Why?" Seamus asks as he sees and hears how despairing Felicity is. "I assume she went back to the station. Should I go chase after her? I was meant to be lookin' after the both of youse so... maybe I should?"
"I don't think it would work, Dad. When she makes her mind up, she's very stubborn," Felicity explains. "These two boys came over and started talking. Well... one came over and started talking to me. He was nice and everything. And then his friend joined and just started throwing shade at Amanda, about her weight, being really nasty. She didn't react straight away but when his friend dragged him away---he wasn't comfortable with what his friend was saying---she put her clothes on and just left. We were doing so well... she was enjoying her sketching. She did a lovely one of me. And she was actually starting to be okay about being out here with only a swimsuit on. I mean, she looked fine, didn't she?"
Seamus nods in agreement. "Sure, Flissy. She didn't look bad or anything. True, it's a little tricky for me, a grown-arse man, to comment on how a tirteen-year-old girl looks in dat way but you get what I mean, yeah? She looked grand."
"Exactly! But she's got it fixed in her head that she's 'the fat girl' and expects everyone to look at her and treat her that way all the time. And then that idiot comes along and confirms her belief in the worst way possible. She's going to hate me for this, Dad! She won't ever trust me again, I'm sure of it," Felicity says.
Seamus reaches forward and puts his hand on his daughter's shoulder for reassurance. "It's not your fault, love. It's dat little sod who called her dose names, no one else to blame."
"Yeah, but she'll still pin it on me, Dad. You know how people are," Felicity says.
A moment of silence passes as father and daughter consider the situation.
"Oh, I phoned Mam and asked if she'd make sure Amanda is on the train and then let me know she's okay," Felicity decides to say after thinking some more.
"Dat's good tinking, love. You're a clever girl," Seamus pats Felicity on the shoulder. "What do you want to do now then? Should we head back? I'll bet you're not feeling too grand in yourself to be wanting to stick around here for much longer, yeah?"
Felicity shrugs. "I dunno. It's such a nice day, and the beach isn't all that crowded, and I was having a brilliant time... apart from that creep you talked to earlier, of course, but I don't think anything'll come of that. I hope not, anyway. But yeah... all the stuff I planned to do like showing Amanda that cool burger place on the promenade with the brilliant shakes, and examining the rock pools for crazy shells and crabs and things, and... nah, not now."
"Don't worry, Flissy. Your Mammy will let us know Amanda's safe, dat's all that matters now," Seamus sympathizes with his daughter, and the two of them sit in silence for a second or two.
"So, anyway... what was dat first boy like, den? You said he was nice, and you and him were talking for a bit before his idiot of a friend turned up," Seamus asks in a sudden change of topic.
"Oh, Dad!" Felicity blushes and casts her eyes down, clearly embarrassed that her father is asking her about such things. "He was... yeah... he was nice, I guess." She pauses and wonders if she should continue with what she was going to say, wonders if she can actually say it to her dad without dying of embarrassment. "I... well... okay, like... he gave me his number!" Felicity stops for the briefest of moments and then looks up at her father with an enthusiasm in her eyes. "He goes to Richard Wells Academy and he's a year older than me and he likes my accent and he's kind and... and... and he's called Melvin!" Felicity gushes out, unable to control herself in a crazed rush of excitement.
"Whoa, Flissy! You go, girl!" Seamus grins at his daughter. "So you'l be givin' him a call, den?"
Felicity looks down again, hiding her face that has reddened for a second time after the impulse to tell everything recedes as quickly as it came over her.
"Maybe. I told him I'll think about it," she finally says after inwardly cringing over her urgency to reveal all and wondering what overcame her in that moment. All she can quickly think of to explain it is that this is the first time she has been approached by a boy and almost got close to securing a date with one, something that, over the past year since her acne started, she feared would never happen. To have it occur so suddenly, so unexpectedly, was confusing and overwhelming but wonderful all at the same time.
"You tease! Keepin' the fella hungry, eh? Heh!" Seamus smiles, clearly taking a certain pride in his daughter. Secretly, he and Paige, Felicity's mother, have noticed Felicity's reticence that coincided with the appearance of her acne approximately a year ago and made their normally outgoing and well-adjusted girl act much more introverted around boys, to the point of mute shyness. This small episode reassures Seamus that it is most likely a passing phase, and she will get over it and eventually begin establishing proper relationships.
"He was okay..." Felicity tries to minimize her just-confessed interest in Melvin to try to deflect any more attention away from the subject. "Anyway, that's beside the point. I'm still worried about Amanda, Dad. Can we just sit here till Mam phones to let us know she's okay?"
"Sure, love," Seamus agrees to Felicity's suggestion. "If you're okay with your blood sugar and everytin'---it is getting near lunchtime, you know?---den yeah, we can sit here for a bit, have some daddy-daughter time like we used to back in the days."
"Thanks, Dad," Felicity says and pulls her phone out of her bag to stare at it intently, hoping for it to light up very soon with some reassuring news.
