I always have troubles with my line holds... I could never really figured out a solid way of doing it. Thank you very much for this

I dunno why I never saw this tutorial before, interesting process on how to achieve color holding, however I have a question ( dunno if it was asked before ), but by using this process you canΒ΄t do trapping later, right ?

You can still run the PS trap filter which would take care of any potential problems.

Such an useful tutorial, thank you! I only knew the way to colour lineart using "saving transperancy" (or what it is called in english) on layers.
Only point: It would be really really nice if you could write down the single steps in short sentences... I'm new to PS, so it is quite hard to follow your instructions just by remembering them from the video.

I used to do written tutorials and it was so tedious and people always ended up asking me to show them or do a vid. If I feel extra motivated next time, I'll try to do both, but if I were you, I'd bet on laziness because that's usually the route I take.

Very nice, John! However...I don't do a lot of coloring in PhotoShop, and got a bit lost.
If time permits, could you type out a step-by-step? I'm a bit confused in some areas...especially after you do the panel border thing?
Thx!

It seems a lot more complicated than your narrative lets on (you've been doing it awhile, so it's second nature to you, but not so much to someone doing it for the first time).

Thanks! It might take a few times to really understand what you're doing, but there's really not a lot to it.

I thank you for the tutorial but I lost you after blur what did you mean by " fill that area with soft light"?
π: 0 β©: 1
JohnRauch In reply to Mickezilla [2008-10-20 17:10:03 +0000 UTC]
I filled the area with black and set the fill mode to "soft light". It's pretty basic Photoshop stuff.

I explained what a line hold was in the video. It's the process of making a black line into a color.

This is really excellent but I MUST be doing something wrong. I just don't know where I'm going wrong.
A quick question: when the vid first starts, I noticed you have two layers. Both have colours. It's hard to tell exactly because the vid isn't big. What's the top layer? I noticed it's always active and viewable yet you never do anything to it.
I'd love to learn this but it's just not working out for me. I'm kind of getting close but it's not quite there.

Those are my flats. Watch the Blue Marvel videos and it will make sense.

ColourDood In reply to JohnRauch [2008-09-13 13:50:07 +0000 UTC]
I re-watched the first Blue Marvel vid and saw how you've got the opacity of your flats layer set at 0%. That was kind of boggling my mind because I didn't catch that before.
Great stuff, bro.
Good luck with Blue Marvel. I hope these books fly off the shelves for ya!

Got it! I know what I was doing wrong. I was applying the blur to the mask instead of the image. No wonder everything looked really whacked out! D'OH!
Many thanks for a great technique! I watched all your other vids numerous times and you've really got a wealth of knowledge.
Thanks for all your contributions to this little community.

No sir, thank you!
I had some questions about it regarding lineart since I use layers for everything and never mess with anything in channels, but I was able to figure out a decent workaround. Ended up using this for a couple of scenes on the book I just finished. Turned out looking nice.
