Great tut! but what if you have characters against a lot of big black areas? Do you have to somehow undercolor under all of those? Like, in the other tut you've got, the 10 min color tut, you can see the panel before this one with the figs on a black background. Do you lay in a dark color under all of that? If you didn't, to adjust the levels to make the bkgrnd black would darken everything else way too much. What am I missing?

When converting from RGB to CMYK in Photoshop, it uses a rich black, not just 100k, so it ends up looking fine.

Thanks! Nope, I'm on a PC. I'm just very used to using keyboard commands and didn't mention what I was doing on the keyboard.

Why is it necessary to have your line art in a channel?

What is the major advantages/disadvantages in doing that over just keeping your top layer in your layer's palette as pure black line art on a transparent background?

I've always worked this way, and avoided channels, and never knew the reason why it seems like everyone else puts it in a channel. It seems like the same thing, only you aren't tempted to fiddle with it because it is not in your layer palette.

Maybe I am missing something big.

JohnRauch In reply to thedaisycutter [2008-08-28 19:55:10 +0000 UTC]

It's a carry over from the days when we had much less RAM. Keeping it in a channel allowed you to work faster as layers are technically made up of 3 channels and use more system resources. As long as it's solid black, it doesn't hurt anything in a channel, but if your system can handle it, layers are fine too. I do that now and then.

Your voice isn't annoying to me. You also rambled far less than was advertised, I think. The only thing that's really getting to me here is how much better your method is than what I've been doing!! >.< But that's obviously not your fault, lol. Thanks very much for posting this man. It's going to help a lot!

I'm in awe, you make it look easy though it's not, at least in my case. I wish I knew how to use channels...

Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos and sharing your process. I've learned a lot from them so far and I'd be thrilled if this became a regular feature. And to be honest you could sound like Porky Pig and I wouldn't care as long as the content you'r eshowing is still there.

Seriously man, it's people like you who are kind enough to show how you do what you do, that allows people like me to grow and become a better artist.

I really appreciate you saying that! Once I shake this cold, hopefully my voice will sound a little better too, so you won't have to listen to Porky Pig.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but at about the 1:35 mark, you said to delete the line layer, but you actually made a copy. Minor nitpick, but just in case anyone was JUST listening to it without watching it or didn't catch it the first time around, I figured I'd point it out.

I love these tutorials your creating-I'm learning a lot! Guess this won't really work on greyscale art huh? Thanks for making this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnRauch In reply to dismang [2008-08-28 17:02:55 +0000 UTC]

No, not really, but I have a different process I use sometimes with greyscale art to give it a little tint, since it's already gradated nicely by value.

ha! I'm pretty sure the way I do it is extremely back woods! Also, sometime I'll have to pester you about how to color calibrate my computer/cintiq, & ICC profiles and other technical stuff I have no clue about! I tried to research on Gutterzombie but can't make sense of anything

JohnRauch In reply to dismang [2008-08-29 03:09:55 +0000 UTC]

Sure thing! I take a very simplistic approach to all this, but it's worked out well for me so far, I think. If you're on one of the messenger services, we'll have to chat some time.

ha, haven't used IM in years! used ichat a looong time ago. That would be great tho, good to hear it is a simplistic approach, I get confused easily
