Thanks for this one; I like the simplicity to it, and how effective it is.

John,
Probably should've sent you this note months ago, but I LOVE this tutorial for line holds that you've posted. I've used it on almost all of my work recently... both as you've instructed above, and also slightly modified (without the color blur into the line art), to make it look more "traditional."
Either way, I've found it extremely useful and flexible and a definite keeper when I color. Many thanks... you've helped a lot of people with it!

This tutorial is phenomenal! Thanks a bunch! This seriously may change the way I do my pieces, and the order in which I work on the different components in my art.

Frustration. Anger. More frustration.
That's what I feel now. I've watched this more that 10 times and I still can't seem to get it right. It's because I didn't do the same steps he's done and of course I can't get to the same result. Can please anybody tell me how to start with the channels so I can copy John's same settings? This technique looks wonderful and I'm sure it'll save a lot of time and effort. But I'm not familiar with the channels and the tutorials I've read didn't help at all because with all of them I had different results, and none of them was the same as this. PLEASE HELP! Thank you in advance.

Do you know if there's a way to do this in Corel Painter X? I tried applying this method to Painter, but I can't seem to make it work and I'm not sure if I'm just doing it wrong or not. I can't quite figure the channels thing out, either. I'll have to watch the vid a few more times. Great work!

How do you make create the lineart as a channel? I just set it up as a layer but it always has that feathered look to it.

I looked for tutorials to explain me how to do this exactly, but they're all different and they don't have the same result. I really hope someone has pity on us and tell us HOW TO START. It's obvious that if you don't know how to get here, we'll never be able to apply this technique.

He's a professional. Don't worry, once upon a time he sucked too. We all suck at the beginning but a good artist is just a sucky person that didn't give up ^__^

I've been practicing photophop for months. D: All I can work ewith are the simple parts, but I guess it won't affect me much because now I'm an MS paint artist.

I've been using Photoshop for years and I'm still learning! It's all about playing around and enjoying experimenting. And if you want to learn how to do something specific then search for help or ask someone and learn just that Then you're not trying to master it all in one go.
Also, I find that sometimes I can do things I'm really happy with and other times (a lot of the time ) I still suck!
And hey, I know it's stupid, but if you got it perfect first time then where would the reward be?

My... god, this is brilliant. You seriously achieve this effect simply by duplicating the coloured background, masking it with a pixel-locked copy of the lineart, blurring it a bit, soft light black and tweaking the levels?

OneFreeInternet In reply to Radtherapist [2009-11-08 14:55:40 +0000 UTC]
A line hold is when you change the color of a line to something other than black usually to complement the color of the object it outlines.
