Description
The Line It Is Drawn 99 for 7/19/12: The theme this week was "Era-Displaced Comic Book Characters."The suggestion I chose was, "1965 green goblin in 2012 being kind of creeped out by all the stuff he did 'Really? Gwen? The girl who went to high school w/ Harry?'" I picked it mainly because it gave me a chance to mock the idiotic "Sins Past" storyline by J. Michael Straczynski, where it's "revealed" that Peter Parker's girlfriend Gwen Stacy secretly had babies fathered by Norman Osborn, even though it made NO sense and was light-years out of character for both of them. And because it's comics, the twins of course rapidly aged and became supervillains themselves. It almost makes the Spider-Clone look good...

Fans actually hate it, but they went too far and cussed out Queseda and others and they then censored the fans reaction.

Yeah... I like to ignore that one. This made me laugh though.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, it never happened.

thank god that bull sins past storyline is now mostly ignored by everyone, but a retcon would be better and JMD wants to retcon it as well, stupid marvel higherups wanting him to change his original script

I'm fine with it just being quietly ignored. In the end, I think that's the best way to deal with bad stories.

yeah true, but the problem is that its still there and if a retcon is made at least theres no chance of revisiting this piece of garbage later on

It's comic books. There's ALWAYS a chance. Even the stupidest storylines imaginable have their fans.

That plotline....guh.
I hate it so hard! It's just so lazy and terrible... and yet somehow it was created!
Great piece though.

I feel the same way. One of the worst things that ever happened to Spider-Man. I think I might even take the Clone Saga over it.

The clone saga did have some good bits. May's death was one of the more poignant moments in my young comic reading experience, and I did like Ben's awesome hoodie based costume.

Have to disagree with you about those specific points, Sean. I'm of the opinion that killing Aunt May off was a mistake, and her revealing that she knew Peter was Spider-Man didn't make much sense. And I never liked the Spider-hoodie look. Outside of Animal Man's jacket, I've never much cared for superheroes wearing stylized clothing instead of costumes (I'm looking in your direction, SMALLVILLE).

Wow, I remember reading this arc. Did JMS really want to do this story? Or was it Joe Q making him do it like in One More Day?

Like it was noted above, JMS originally wanted it to be PETER and Gwen's kids. Editorial had him change it to Osborn. Crappy idea either way, IMO.

Peter being the dad IS a dumb idea, but the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

Straczynski later stated he originally wanted to make Peter Parker the father of Gwen's kids but the editors vetoed the idea. They felt it would age Peter Parker too much if he had two adult children. The whole creative and editorial team then decided Norman Osborn would be the father. In an e-mail to popular comic book website Newsarama, Straczynski claimed he regretted the version of Sins Past that went to press, and he had hoped to "retcon" it out of continuity during the events of the recent One More Day storyline. Straczynski said, "I wanted to retcon the Gwen twins out of continuity, which was something I always assumed I could do at the end of my run. I wasn't allowed to do this, and yes, it pissed me off." So if it fills anyone with comfort knowing Straczynski regrets what had happened in Sins Past, then at least he'll live with it now.

I'd rather he came to that realization before he wrote the story into four months' worth of comics.

Yeah, I'm rather sick of stories being officially written out of continuity, too, but I'd have NO complaints if it happened to this one.

Yeah, that was in the same story. Basically just JMS stacking the deck to make it concrete that they were Osborn's kids.

yeah those new dumass writers tend to screwup the spidey stories alot. i like the classic old stories from the 60s-80s. the new stories are whack and they are disgrace to stanlee's legacy

Thanks, although it's really kind of sad if a gag cartoon showing Spidey sitting down to a friendly lunch with the guy who killed his girlfriend is MORE in character than what they're publishing now...

Well, Dan Slott's still writing the book now, isn't he? I generally enjoy his stuff (That Spider-Man/Human Torch mini he wrote was GREAT!). I'm not keeping up with the Spider-Man books now, but I feel like he's in good hands at least.

The first time I've heard that story, I was like : "Cool, the Goblin -my favourite villain ever !- found a way to screw Peter's life even more ! "
But then I grew up and now I'm like : " Whut really ?!! That's make no sens !!"

Yeah, it REALLY doesn't make sense if you've read any of the Silver Age stories with Gwen Stacy. Not only is it horribly out of character for her to sleep with another man on impulse, there is also NO TIME for her to carry the babies to term. I'm really sick of comic book stories that rewrite past continuity rather than move forward with NEW things.
