I think gratuitous violence doesn't tend to do it for chicks so much as it does it for dudes.  Probably got something to do with testosterone.

No, but if their corporate sponsors (The Koch Brothers) told them to as their oil profits decrease, they would.  Canada has now become so corporate (oil/gas/coal) controlled they'd likely go right along with it.  They all think drinkable water will never run out, or if they know better they don't care.$$$$$$

They've started charging for water here, except they call it charging for the delivery of water by the amount of water that is used.  The more 'water' used, the more the infrastructure gets worn down, so the argument goes.  So instead of charging home owners a flat fee for that infrastructure each year, they still charge a flat fee, but have reduced it somewhat and then made the balance of the bill variable based on consumption.  Any leak in the plumbing, pipes, etc, can lead to very large bills.  Some rental places have used this to justify passing on the variable part of the bill to tenants, only charging the now smaller fixed portion to landlords.  However, in order to legally justify placing that bill on tenants the landlord must ensure there are absolutely ZERO infrastructure leaks.  When faced with the cost of having that inspected on a regular basis and fixed, I'm thinking a number of landlords would rather take the bill hit personally than try and pass that on to tenants.  We will see how that works out.  I've just moved to a town where that has not come in yet.

I've only paid for water twice, the rest of the time we've lived out in the boonies and had our own well.

How has the snowpack been in the Mountains been these last few years?

jojo22 In reply to Ragnar949 [2015-06-29 00:07:47 +0000 UTC]

Snowpack?  I don't really know.  I know we have good spring and mineral water supplies in NZ.  You are lucky to have your own water source.  You probably have to treat it with something right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ragnar949 In reply to jojo22 [2015-06-29 11:47:04 +0000 UTC]

I could find no info on NZs snowpack other than ski reports for the South Island which are nearly worthless in terms of long term trends.

No we don't have to treat it.  We have limited AG around so our water is pretty good.  Nitrates are the biggest concern around here, we are lucky in that regard.  The effects of nitrates are worse for pregnant women and children.  Most of our county is affected by nitrates.  Our biggest threat though are the High Capacity wells that are sucking our aquifer dry.  We had the richest water supply in the country...note the word "had."  The Ag industry thinks it's all theirs, private wells are going dry, villages, spring fed streams, ponds and lakes.  And still they approve the HCWs left and right, because according to our Gov, we are "open for business."  Do we really need all those potatoes to make french fries and TV dinners?

Argh, don't get me started.  Just makes me feel like knocking heads together.  Business that does not consider sustainability with the land beyond their primary purpose is business that will quickly run itself out of business.  You can only get away with destructive practices for so long before Mother Nature lays down a big fuck you.
