It has in my experience; As a drug user, I'm friends with plenty of straight-edges, most of which are fully aware that I use drugs.

I mean, yeah, I got 2 friends that I know smokes weed (they once tricked me into paying for it as they were broke lol) and would sit around and smoke it and we would hang out while I just sat there.
But those are of course friends. I'm more talking about randoms and/or strangers and not someone that someone is close to.
Also got 5 friends that drink.

Me personally don't, but I've seen at many many times of strangers on both sides of either straight edge or not doing that approval/disapproval of another stranger and their lifestyles.
Which they at times either ignore or get in a stupid childish argument.

I guess that depends on where you live. From what I have found, the probleme is a lot more complex in N. America.

you're very lucky to feel wonder this. It's not that people all of sudden wake up and say i wanna be a pot head or I wanna be a heroin addict. It's trying it once and depending what it does for you, for example - makes you numb and dulls pain. emotional, physical... and sometimes that feeling is 100 times better than reality at that moment and time in that persons life. Worst part is its usually a downward spiral b/c most drugs are addictive - some more than others.

But now that just brings other questions, like if people turn to drugs to ease a sort of pain (more than physical), what is the pain, what is causing that pain, and what can be done to undue it, rather than take a pill?

Drugs aren't all bad. Using them to create art is a more sensible approach than just partying till you drop. They are not an end in themselves, only a method.
