I'm an advocate for not doing hard drugs, but your statement that art is healthier than drugs is just false.
Art is an obsession like anything else. Most artists suffer from depression and generally hate their own art and their own creative works because they are under the paranoid delusion that it is sub par and not worthy of existence. Many more artists commit suicide without the help of drugs or alcohol. Art comes from a subculture of humanity that -generally- finds themselves at the fridge of society. They typically suffer from bullying, from being outcast from the social norms that others not preoccupied with art indulge in, and they tend to be lonely.
Obviously this doesn't apply to EVERYONE, but start looking around you, and you'll start noticing it. The artist isn't the one invited to the large social gathering, nor is the artist the one that everyone thinks is the life of the party. Yes, their creative works are revered and awe'd at by most around them, but an artists mind is wired differently than the majority of society. That is actually a scientific fact. Artistic ability comes from a certain part of your brain that not everyone is geared toward mentally (your physical mentality), and should you be inclined toward it, you will find yourself the abnormal in a society of norms.
Seriously though. Start looking around you. You'll start noticing it.
So, Art is much better for your health? I'd say mental health is just as important as physical health. And there have been QUITE a few artists that have driven themselves insane for their art. Or been driven insane BY their art. :/

Yum, artists at the fridge of society!
(To your point: it's not ART itself that's unhealthy, though. Artists are certainly more predisposed to mental illness, but it's not caused by the art! As you said yourself, it's biological.)

SilentAsShadows In reply to elGallifrey [2013-02-11 16:04:45 +0000 UTC]
I know right? XDD
[My point was that art itself -can- be unhealthy, because the practice can exacerbate these predispositions. Some people consider -cutting themselves- a kind of art. This is an instance where the art itself is the unhealthy thing. Any true obsession, like the obsession of artists in their art, is unhealthy.]

Well -- it's true that something like cutting yourself is very unhealthy -- but that would indicate an underlying problem beyond "art". In my experience art tends to be more therapeutic than harmful. The APA would tend to agree [link]

In my mind, I find art just as addicting (although I have never done drugs of any sort) and give me a personal high when I finish a project.
Of course I am ALWAYS high on imagination

I like that its so simple and bottom lined.
Some people think they need to get high to be artistic but really how can you portray your emotion properly if you cant even think straight. Therefore, creating work without meaning.
Thanks for making this, people need to realize drugs won't help in any circumstance.

Depends what kind of drug you're doing. You're thinking completely straight under Weed, Ecstasy or Amphetamine for example.

yeah well other than prescribed ones I don't believe in the others. It's just very unnatural to me. Plus these are the most problematic, I just had something in mind whilst writing that comment.

So you believe in prescribed drugs, which have even worse side-effects that weed would ever have? Prescribed drugs are the most unnatural kind...

I come from an art school that's infamous for these kind of things so I know it enough to know it's a bad thing but this isn't really my kind of topic. I just said my opinion. No need to make a big deal about it.

Same : D, I stopped doing the so called non-natural drugs 'cause of the huge weight-loss that comes with them, and also the beyond horrible Acid trip I had.

Do drugs, make art, cut off your ear and fight your way to a cold freedom of mind that will lead to your rise and fall like that of a brilliant star exploding, leaving only a black hole in its wake.

Though, you know, some great artists did drugs. Shit, R. Crumb is a pretty decent example.
So you could do both. I guess. But for the love of everything, if you're gonna do drugs, at least get a sober "spotter" who can keep you from clawing your face off if you go on a bad trip.
But no really don't do drugs
unless you're in a super-controlled environment

seriously ive gotten some amazing ideas from that xD
Of course I'm not telling people to do drugs, but if you feel OBLIGATED to.. do the safest one kiddies!

Yeah, I mean I personally am not a fan of pot, and of course any drug abuse will fuck you up, but I personally have always wanted to try something mind-altering just once. But, I'd want to do it in a safe place near someone I trust.
I'm not advocating that everyone should go out and do cocaine though or something. That would be really bad. Nobody should do something hard. I think we can all universally agree on that at least.

Though I have always been anti-narcotic, most famous contemporary artists and art in general for the past hundred years were mostly influenced by drugs in one way or another.
...which leads to a lot of pop artists that confuses me as to why they don't get sued for a lot of their work... And it also explains why so many artists die young...
This guy likely damaged himself permanently, but he drew his self portrait many times, each under a different drug. I do not recommend it, but you can see why people think drugs help their art: [link]

I think the amount of art (decent art, that is) that is done on drugs is highly overestimated. I find that I produce my best work when I'm in full control of my body.

I don't do drugs, never have, never will, I just know art and drugs seem to go hand in hand a lot of the time. Unless it's drawing, then that tends to be done better when not on drugs, but there is more to art than drawing.

I'll agree that there are plenty of artists that do drugs, I just don't believe that it benefits the artistic process in any way. My imagination is perfectly capable of thinking up crazy things, without the assistance of drugs.

MorphoAdonis In reply to SoulSilverHeartGold [2013-02-11 02:43:47 +0000 UTC]
I used depressants for a while to simply help me focus on an image. I found that it made me able to draw what I was seeing in my head a little more clearly; I think they can be as much of a tool as meditation or a paintbrush, but should be used sparingly to keep from dependence. Sometimes I draw under the influence of a drug, most of the time I don't.
I don't think there's any right or wrong answer, though, just like there's no right or wrong way to be an artist.
