Description I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.

I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

Too bad I wasn't talking at all about the turbine.

I don't care much about SW, but I do care to bitch on weird people who think everything fictional has to be some fluffy fantasy, this picture was as good place to do it as any other, regardless of its accuracy.

I'm a person who needs realism  in their fantasy as well. I can write sonatas about how much skimpy armor, overly large swords and other things like that bug me.

That being said, the X wings design is sound if you look at the tech.

People didn't think the F 14 would work either, but it did.

you are seriously creepy obsessed. youve gone through everyones posts who agree the design is dumb and copy pasta the same thing. it was a joke. something funny because the design looks dumb. 98% of us (including you) arent engineers, or engineers from a long time ago and a galaxy far away. to the majority of us, the design looks dumb because circles are how things go zoom.

calm down and stop spamming peoples inboxes with fun-sucking, humor-hating copy pasta. jeepers.

Ralph McQuarrie's designs for the X-Wings had a split design, if I'm remembering correctly. I don't disagree in the least that it's silly if we accept it's a turbine, but in this at least, Abrams is just following what's gone before.

No Turbines in those engines. Look at the trailers closely and the leaked photo of the xwing, The two engines are sleeker and smaller and fit together to seem like one, its totally fine in logic.

CoconutPeeler In reply to ??? [2015-04-17 19:16:52 +0000 UTC]

'I understand people can be nitpicky, but I've never even made the correlation between the X-Wing's engines and a turbine engine (only now do I note similarities), because if it was a turbine engine, it would require air to fly thus preventing space flight. I always believed they were vents for dispersing engine heat, as that makes much more sense. On that theory, and that it's been several years since Episode 6, when it came time to upgrade the X-Wing, part of said upgrade was overhauled engines for enhanced speed and maneuverability, which also led to new cooling vents (NOT turbines).

This post and the accompanying comments have raised a number of interesting and contradictory tropes that occur in both fiction and Internet discussions:

Reality is Unrealistic -- "When exposed to an exaggeration or fabrication about certain real-life occurrences or facts, some people will perceive the fictional account as being more true than any factual account."

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Artistic License -- "Creators are allowed to be inaccurate if the inaccuracy serves the story better than accuracy would." JollyJack uses this one himself.

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Aluminum Christmas Trees -- "An element that exists or has existed in Real Life, but is assumed to be fictional by audiences, often because it seems too unlikely, bizarre, or kitschy to be real."

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Bellisario's Maxim -- "Don't examine things too closely."

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

MST3K Mantra -- "It's just a show; you should really just relax." JollyJack has used this one, too.

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Moff’s Law -- "At some point during a discussion on a work in pop culture, the probability of someone stating a variation of 'Why can't you just enjoy it for what it is?' in order to dismiss critical analysis is high." In other words, it's not over-analysis when every stray thought about the film has to be quashed lest you realize how stupid the movie is.

Looks can be deceiving. I don't think even old EU data stated that the X-Wing had turbines... More than likely the thinking is that since the X-Wing was originally designed to look like a futuristic Earth aircraft, they've added more elements to reinforce that theme. So, while it looks like a turbine... it won't be a turbine. That's how Sci-Fi works...

It's similar to how physics has looked at the Warp Drive in Star Trek. While it might be possible to accelerate a particle faster than light, doing so would make that particle light itself and thus all control would be lost... at least based on our present understanding of physics. Star Trek invented a sort of device that protects their starships against that occurrence. At one point, one of the Star Trek creators/writers was asked how the device worked. The answer was: "Quite well."

Jolly, I love you and your hamster, but the X-Wing has four "turbines," not two. One on each side of each wing/s-foil pair.

That being said, turbines. What are they going to suck in outside of an atmosphere? ...space air?
