Description
I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

I always thought same as you, the design would never work... maybe in Space, but they used them on planets also. Ty for showing what many of us have thought for years...

Years? you found problems with the 4 engine design of a Star Fighter? .. really?Β You must of paid zero attention to any of the actual tech or lore of the world.
You're like the scifi critic version of the person standing there off to the side, telling the inventor of the cannon "That's not gonna work, You need a Bow string and stuff!"

that is the actual variant of the X wing. The XJ5 X Wing look it up, it was used after the civil war was done.
It is part of the old lore, It's not a turbine, it's a sleeker engine cowling to signify an upgrade to the venerable StarFighter.

Turbines don't work in space. It's not a f'n turbine.
And you drew the new foils wrong. They don't split up and down now, they split front and back. One edge going up, the other edge going down.
If you're going to criticize, at least have half a f'n clue.

Why would it need to rely on the turbines when it's got rocket engines? I mean, that's how it stays operational in space, right?

StacieMeier In reply to MarikBentusi [2015-04-17 21:22:00 +0000 UTC]
Even if not a turbine, it wouldn't work design wise... That was his point. ON a planet, it would be deadly. And they used them on planets... I do agree with you in space though.Β

this sounds like a question for /r/asksciencefiction but we aren't on reddit so I'll roll out my complete lack of credentials and try to bullshit up an answer for you.
Most likely the X-wing uses some sort of plasma based propulsion system, and the "turbine" exists largely as a means of air intake for cooling purposes. Now an air intake is downright useless in space anyways, but that's okay because flying is also easier in space what with the lack of air resistance and gravity, as such the engines will generate far less heat in space. Now the "blades" of the turbine are inexplicable if they exist for any reason other than aesthetics, as they have no means of turning even with the S-foils locked together, but splitting the engine down the middle is largely arbitrary as it's shape is also arbitrary because a plasma engine, especially at such a "rule of cool" tech level, can more readily be crammed into strangely shaped chassis than a turbine engine can.

MarikBentusi In reply to shadow7128 [2015-04-17 21:33:51 +0000 UTC]
Well if we make it an air intake instead of a turbine we're kinda leaving the central logic of the comic behind, aren't we?

shadow7128 In reply to MarikBentusi [2015-04-20 01:07:54 +0000 UTC]
well I mean we must also remember that jollyjack, and indeed all the rest of us, has no idea what sort of logic these things are supposed to be operating, the comic is just to poke fun at the "rule of cool" logic they were definitely designed with. I was more illustrating that something like that can still technically be salvaged fro ma standpoint of plausibility.
I also like designing starfighters and other sci-fi nonsense myself so I took trying to justify the split-turbines as a challenge.
so basically yes.

There are not even any "Turbines" in the design, Jack just added that himself to fabricate a point to bitch about.

Considering how many real aircraft are powered by jet turbines that have non circular intakes, I really don't have a problem the semicircular intakes on the new X-wings. It's the front/back split to the wings I'm not a fan of. Looks atrocious.
The real question, is why does a spacecraft even have intakes? I would think that it flies in space would kinda kill the whole turbine argument, anyway.

Heiryuu In reply to Greyryder [2015-04-17 20:25:05 +0000 UTC]
i would assume that it means that the spaceplane has jets that work in atmosphere, but in the star wars Β universe they have repulser lift engines that hold the craft in the air, so they don't need intakes.

air cooling for planetary flight. the wings, .. S foils are meant to radiate heat from the engine and shield generator.Β

mmfree In reply to dashomally [2015-04-17 22:02:00 +0000 UTC]
that's not a cross guard, it's a visual effect, which gets chopped off really fast. From the first trilogy (4th-6th movies ) you see lightsabers that way because they need to be as fast and as manageable as possible. If your hand gets chopped off it's like a katana duel: you suck at using it ( taking katana assumed as the sharpest swords in history )

What I saw in the new trailer is x-wing fighters with splitted engines, a robot which is substantially A BALL! New fashionable uniforms for the stormtroopers, and Revan's mask remade...

It could be a ramjet, which looks a lot like a turbine from the outside, but is definitively different mechanically. Β A ramjet also makes more sense for an endo/exo craft because you could change fuel sources by sealing the intake spike or opening it back up. Β Additionally, if you look at the old designs, there's a conical shape in the intake that would make it a ramjet rather than a turbine.
