Description
I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

I think that it's design, on its own merits, is ugly and Fraunkensteen in its approach.

I sense a great disturbance in the force...alot of the insiders at Star Wars Celebration...are not so sure.
I will wait and see the movie, but with the EU completely amputated...its going to be dicey.
And look at the smoldering ruins of the Transformers and Trek universes...if you want a good point.

Just because it's two half cylinders put together doesn't mean that it's a turbine. Looking at the old concept art the design is based off it, it doesn't LOOK like a turbine. Considering it's a space craft, the intakes are possibly ram air scoops or fuel scoops. Most likely though? It's powered by space magic. The round shape is just aesthetics.

Not to bust your balls, but really? Splitting a propulsion device that looks like a turbine is the last straw on the camel's back, but the *ahem* lightsaber, FTL travel, etc. etc., and The Force (aka "Magic") get a pass?
Love you, Jolly, but... Fantasy has a logic all its own, which you undoubtedly know. The bulk of reality has no place in a fantasy nerd fight.
P.S. Chloe: Salacious Jedi or Sith Seductress?
P.P.S. What looks like a turbine intake might be a ram scoop.

From my understanding they are fusial thrust engines, not turbines.

Yeah....That is pretty bad unfortunately...Awful actually....Just like that incredibly stupid lightsaber crossguard...I still can't believe that is actually a thing >_<
Abrams isn't inspiring confidence with all this impractical technology crap that's meant to look cool but actually isn't...I WANT to be psyched for this movie & hope that it will turn out great, but stuff like this keeps popping up and making me worried.

Dunoid In reply to KaijuDuke [2015-04-17 18:37:50 +0000 UTC]
I always thought lightsabers looked stupid without a cross guard. The complete lack of protection makes it useless in combat, which is sort of a big deal when you're using it for that exact purpose. If any of it were real, jedis would be losing all their fingers the first light saber fight they got into.

KaijuDuke In reply to Dunoid [2015-04-17 19:12:10 +0000 UTC]
I'm fine with the idea of a crossguard on a lightsaber so long as its made of heat resistant metal (which exists in various Star Wars continuity), instead of additional light saber beams poking out of the sides (which are more hazardous to the person wielding the weapon than the opponent). That's why I don't like the new light saber design.

I suppose that makes sense. But it's not entirely crazy, and I'm sure there are crazier things in the Star Wars universe than it.
I feel people are being entirely too cynical about the whole thing.

You know, I hate to burst your bubble. but that is the actual variant of the X wing. The XJ5 X Wing look it up, it was used after the civil war was done.
It is part of the old lore, It's not a turbine, it's a sleeker engine cowling to signify an upgrade to the venerable StarFighter.

Oh please! You might as well rant against the chainmail bikini in fantasy. The original was no fountain of science and technology accuracy just as its the pulp sci-fi source materials, "The Lensmen, Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon, were not. Parsecs anyone?
How about ranting over the dearth of originality in movies? A remake of "Road Warrior"? Oh, come on! It was a product of the seventies gas crisis much as the out space/alien invaders movies were a product of the fifties "space age".

Still its four engines. Not two that physically split in half while being expected to have no change in performance or output.
Nevermind the whole, your know, requiring an air intake while flying in space...

Streaked-Silver In reply to Doga-87 [2015-04-17 19:11:33 +0000 UTC]
I know it is still 4 engines,
And Air intake would be needed for when being used in a non heat neutral setting such as planets. the S foils (wings) are actually there and split to radiate engine heat and improve stress levels on the systems.

To be honest, I never actually followed the post-civil war era of Star Wars... Barely know anything about it
Well, if its mean only for appearance instead of actual turbine, makes more sense

It's just for appearance. It was in the Dark Horse comics that ran the story after the trilogy and before the prequels.
There is no "Turbine" appearance in those engines, he added those turbine lines himself.

Considering all of that is now Legends canon, its kinda sad... I checked the articles about the X-Wing, both the canon and the Legends, and the former merely states what the fighter is, while the latter has very detailed technical info. Don't know if they already updated the canon one, but yeah...
And okey then, sorry for the misconception D:
